Why are you introducing these changes? (Problem description, related links)

--remove-feature currently edits the persisted user feature list, but removal requests need validation before they can safely change deployment state. In particular, users must not remove unknown or non-removable features, flavor-provided features, or dependencies still required by enabled features. This depends on the pending Obsah PR #140, which exposes raw removal operands to playbooks without persisting them.

What are the changes introduced in this pull request?

  • Add removable metadata for BMC, Templates, and Registration, and show removability in foremanctl features.
  • Validate removal requests against feature metadata, the current flavor, and direct or transitive dependencies. Preserve add/remove command-line ordering, including re-adding a feature in the same invocation.
  • Keep features as the single persisted user feature list; use transient removal operands for validation and validate feature changes in pull-images as well as deployment playbooks.
  • Add unit and integration coverage and document feature removal behavior and metadata.

How to test this pull request

Steps to reproduce:

  • With the pending Obsah change installed, run the unit tests:
    python -m pytest --confcutdir=tests/unit tests/unit/filter_test.py tests/unit/check_role_test.py -q
    Expected: 34 tests pass.
  • On a deployed development VM, run ./foremanctl deploy --add-feature bmc, then ./foremanctl deploy --remove-feature bmc. Verify bmc is removed from .var/lib/foremanctl/parameters.yaml and is no longer enabled; adding it again should re-enable it.
  • Try ./foremanctl deploy --remove-feature foreman and ./foremanctl deploy --remove-feature invalid-feature. Each request should fail validation and leave the persisted feature list unchanged. With registration enabled, removing templates should fail because it is a required dependency.
  • Run ./forge test on a deployed VM to exercise the integration tests, including tests/flavor/katello/feature_removal_test.py.

Checklist

I am slo tempted to remove the --remove-feature flag all together until we actually have something.

I think that's a good idea. There are some plugins we can't remove yet anyway because in Foreman we can't roll back the database.

@evgeni reminded me that there are some foreman-proxy features that are already removable

Is the idea behind this that you can run some active code to remove the features? I can see that.

I've considered a generic framework in foreman, like foreman-rake plugin:remove[$plugin]. This could be used for it.

Overall I like the structure/concept.

Probably not a blocker, but today we can easily remove Foreman Proxy features. So we can easily remove smart_proxy_ansible, but not foreman_ansible. I know you didn't mark it as removable now so we can deal with that in the future.

I think that's a good idea.

Please also note we've already started to add --remove-feature to documentation, so I wouldn't want to see it go away.

Can we also add this to deploy-dev?

Can we also add this to deploy-dev?

I guess... although I don't know what will happen in dev with this. As the --add-feature is not seamless (see #443). Think about the case where you deploy a foreman-proxy vs. a smart-proxy via git. What does removing features mean in those two use cases in dev?

Honestly, I'd prefer to keep this to production for now and solve features cleanly in deploy-dev.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds removable metadata for selected features, displays removability, and validates feature removal requests and dependencies. Deployment inputs, validation order, tests, and documentation are updated to cover feature selection and persistence.

Changes

Feature removal support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Feature metadata and listing
src/features.yaml, src/filter_plugins/foremanctl.py, src/playbooks/features/features.yaml, tests/conftest.py, tests/unit/filter_test.py
Selected features gain removable: true metadata. Feature listings display removability and flavor protection. Tests parse the additional output column and cover removal validation.
Removal and dependency validation
src/vars/defaults.yml, src/filter_plugins/foremanctl.py, src/roles/check_features/tasks/main.yaml, tests/unit/check_role_test.py, tests/unit/filter_test.py
The defaults define remove_features. Filters validate removal requests and report missing dependencies. The check_features role runs the checks, and tests cover validation behavior and role ordering.
Feature selection and deployment integration
src/playbooks/_flavor_features/metadata.obsah.yaml, src/playbooks/pull-images/pull-images.yaml, src/requirements.txt, tests/features_test.py, tests/flavor/katello/feature_removal_test.py, docs/developer/*, docs/user/parameters.md
The removal argument is marked non-persistent. Deployment validation and tests cover rejected requests and feature state changes. Documentation describes removal rules and persistence behavior. The Obsah requirement points to a Git revision.

Feature removal validation can reject a harmless repeat removal of an already-absent feature that another enabled feature depends on. This contradicts the documented idempotent behavior. The Obsah dependency also tracks an unpinned pull-request branch, so later installs may run unreviewed code. Fix the dependency check and pin Obsah to a reviewed commit before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not reject an absent feature as a removed dependency.

If registration is enabled and templates is absent from the persisted user list, --remove-feature templates changes nothing. Line 172 still adds templates to remove_set, and the dependency check rejects the deployment. registration declares templates as a dependency, so this breaks the documented idempotent no-op. Track which entries the remove action actually deleted, or compare against the prior explicit feature list before checking dependencies. (github.com)

Restore the initial bmc deployment state on cleanup.

When bmc was initially enabled and a post-removal assertion fails, the cleanup branch performs no deploy. The finally block only restores parameters.yaml, so later tests in the same CI environment can observe bmc as removed through ./foremanctl features. This is a failure-path test-environment leak, so the severity is minor.
