Connect no longer commits its generated reference docs. Each release attaches them as redpanda-connect-docs.tar.gz, and modify-connect-tag-playbook now downloads that asset for the latest release and adds the partials and examples to the connect component.

  • Pick a specific release with the tag extension config, or preview unreleased connect changes with REDPANDA_CONNECT_DOCS_DIR.
  • A release without the asset (404) adds nothing, and the existing guard stops the build if connector pages then have no fields. Any other download or archive failure stops the build.
  • Files another source already provides are skipped, so this works while rp-connect-docs still commits its own copies.
  • A playbook that still lists connect as a content source keeps the old pin-and-filter behavior.

Tested with a real Antora build of rp-connect-docs docs/source-from-connect against a full asset: 2,217 files added, zero missing connect includes, all 286 field pages render fields.

When the playbook has no connect content source, modify-connect-tag-playbook
now downloads the redpanda-connect-docs.tar.gz asset of the latest stable
connect release (or the release in its `tag` config) and adds its partials
and examples to the connect component in contentClassified. Files another
source already provides are skipped. REDPANDA_CONNECT_DOCS_DIR points at a
local copy of the tree (a directory with modules/, or a local tarball) to
preview unreleased changes, and wins over everything.

A 404 means the release predates the asset: it is logged and nothing is
added, so the generate-rp-connect-info guard stops the build. Any other
download or archive failure fails the build. The added files carry a
connect origin with the tag, so generate-rp-connect-info reads catalog.json
and info.csv for the same release. The contentClassified listener is
prepended so it runs before the guard wherever the extension is listed.

Playbooks that still list the connect repo as a content source keep the
pin and filter behavior and download nothing.
Describe the release asset, the tag option, and REDPANDA_CONNECT_DOCS_DIR in the extension reference, and drop the connect content source from the local playbooks.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The extension now loads Connect reference partials and examples from a release asset or a local directory or archive. Playbooks that list the Connect repository retain source filtering and tag handling. The field-reference extension and catalog comments now account for both release assets and content sources. Tests and documentation cover the new sourcing paths and their failure cases.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 52cfc

A transient interruption while downloading the Connect asset can fail a documentation build, though rerunning the build is a workaround. The change is mergeable with that bounded reliability risk accepted.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 52cfc

The new source mode limits catalog additions to Connect reference content and keeps download requests separate from authenticated release lookup. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but input trust and downstream rendering still depend on the consuming build’s configuration.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Control of the selected upstream release asset or local input can influence reference content across all Connect versions in a consuming build. Its catalog.json can also influence metadata distributed to Connect, Cloud and preview components. This requires control of a trusted publishing or build-input source; arbitrary public request control was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Authenticated release metadata lookup and redirect-following asset retrieval are separate operations. The asset request supplies only a User-Agent header, not the GitHub API token. The configured tag is encoded within a fixed repository URL.
  • observed — The local override deliberately accepts an operator-selected filesystem location rather than confining it to the repository. Catalog path controls limit destination ownership, but do not authenticate or sanitize the documentation bytes.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Catalog additions are synchronous and duplicate-aware, while acquisition is completed first. There is no local transaction or rollback around multiple addFile calls. Shared resolved-ref state is cleared at context start but remains process-global; isolation between overlapping build contexts is not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider explicit compressed-size, expanded-size, entry-count and per-file limits for build failure containment. The new reader buffers the download, synchronously expands the archive and collects regular-file contents before path filtering; limits would reduce the impact of unexpectedly large inputs without implying a verified exploit.

…t download

The guard now stops the build when connector pages have field partials but
no description partials, since every page's :description: comes from them.
A connection that drops while reading the asset body is retried like a
failed request.
… docs asset yet

Connect publishes a release before its release workflow attaches
redpanda-connect-docs.tar.gz, and that job can fail. When the latest
release (not one picked with the tag config) has no asset, use the newest
older stable release that does, and warn naming both releases.

The GitHub releases API lists the 10 most recent releases with their
assets, so only the chosen release is downloaded. Without the API, probe
the downloads of the next 3 lower stable git tags. When none has the
asset, add nothing and leave the decision to the guard. The shared ref and
the origin of the added files are the release actually used.
…uard

- Remove an upstream redpanda-data/connect source with tags: latest as its
only ref from the playbook, with a warning, and use the release asset.
Connect releases no longer ship docs/antora.yml, so Antora could not
aggregate it, and while it was listed no asset was downloaded. A connect
source with explicit refs (a branch, a tag, a fork, a local clone) is
kept for previews, and the guard error names it.
- Require the availability partials and the common and advanced examples,
not only fields and descriptions, so an incomplete asset stops the build
  instead of publishing unresolved includes.
- Fail when a release picked with the tag config has no asset, and reject
tag: latest, which is the default.
- Let REDPANDA_CONNECT_DOCS_DIR replace files another source provides, and
  log how many were replaced.
The guard asked for availability partials and both snippet directories on
every build, but rp-connect-docs main includes no availability partials
yet, so every build that uses it failed until a Connect release shipped
the asset. The guard now reads the include lines of the connector pages
and requires each partial and example directory they use, so it asks for
exactly what the build needs before and after the pages migrate.
connect's info.csv pads every column, headers included, so the driver
filter read row.type as undefined and dropped all SQL drivers from the
components catalog once a release asset supplied catalog.json.

Checked at f86cd61. The code looks solid, and CI is green on Node 18 and 20. The main thing is merge order with the playbook PRs, which matters more now that redpanda-data/connect#4863 merged today.

Merge order with the playbook PRs

The new REFERENCE.adoc says "Connect releases no longer include docs/antora.yml, so Antora cannot aggregate that source." The last three releases (v4.112.0, v4.111.1, v4.111.0) still include it, so the next release is probably the first without.

Six open PRs add connect as a tags: latest content source on 5.52.0: redpanda-data/docs#2117, redpanda-data/docs-site#260, redpanda-data/cloud-docs#748, redpanda-data/adp-docs#356, redpanda-data/redpanda-labs#309, and redpanda-data/docs-template#5. If any of them merges before this PR ships, the next Connect release breaks that repo's build. 5.52.0 pins the source to the new tag, and Antora then stops with "antora.yml not found", the same failure I reproduced on docs#2117.

Suggested order:

  1. Hold the six playbook PRs.
  2. Release this PR.
  3. Revise those six PRs to drop the content-source lines, keep only the extension registration, and bump to the new release. Otherwise each build logs the "no longer needed" warning.
  4. Update step 1 of redpanda-data/rp-connect-docs#531's merge order to "a Connect release attaches redpanda-connect-docs.tar.gz".

Suggestions

  • connect-docs-asset.js:46: zlib.gunzipSync(buffer) has no maxOutputLength. The source is trusted, but a cap (a few hundred MB, say) would turn a bad asset into a clear error rather than an out-of-memory crash in CI.
  • Optional: there's no integrity check on the download. If Connect publishes a SHA-256 alongside the asset, verifying it would be cheap.

Verified

  • Archive handling is safe: it parses in memory with no disk extraction, and keeps only File entries (no symlinks, links, or directories). toResource rejects .. and empty path segments, and anything outside modules/components/{partials,examples} is dropped. A truncated archive fails, because the parser is strict and checks the end-of-archive marker.
  • Download: it retries on network errors, 5xx, and 429. A 404 means no asset, and any other 4xx stops immediately. CodeRabbit's body-read finding is fixed in 6a6beb5, with tests.
  • Fallback: falling back to an older release logs a warning that names both releases, and an explicit tag never falls back. When no asset is found, generate-rp-connect-info now fails on any missing generated set the pages include, not just fields/. That also closes the description-partials gap from redpanda-data/cloud-docs#755.
  • Tests: there's a 587-line asset test file, and the real Antora build of rp-connect-docs docs/source-from-connect (2,217 files) is a strong end-to-end check.

A corrupt or wrong asset now fails with a clear error instead of running
the docs build out of memory.

Thanks @Feediver1. The six playbook PRs no longer list connect as a content source, they only register the extension, so the next Connect release can't trip them. I've also turned them back into drafts until this ships, then I'll bump them to the release. Added the unpack cap in cdbf200: over 512 MiB it fails with a clear error instead of running out of memory. I've left the checksum for now.
