Asciidoctor applies unconstrained emphasis (__), bold (**), and highlight (##) inside backtick code spans, and the markers pair up across spans on a line. This is live today:

  • salesforce: "custom objects end with __c; Big Objects end with __b" renders __c and __b as <code><em>c</code>...</em>b</code>.
  • git: '.git/**', '**/*.png' renders as bold.
  • microsoft_sql_server_cdc (in rp-connect-docs PR 529): the new __$start_lsn and __$seqval columns break the same way.

The generator now wraps any code span that holds one of these markers in a +...+ passthrough, in description, field, and metadata partials.

It also fixes two metadata partial bugs:

  • A field name wasn't inline-coded when its parenthetical description nests parentheses, as on the new lsn, seqval, and command_id fields.
  • A list directly under a paragraph ("...added as well:" then "- field") rendered as one paragraph with literal dashes. Now a blank line goes before it. This affects http_server, azure_cosmosdb (input and processor), and microsoft_sql_server_cdc.

Verified by regenerating rp-connect-docs PR 529's branch with this change and with main. The only differences are the 9 intended code spans (git, salesforce, and salesforce_cdc partials, plus the 3 SQL Server metadata columns) and the 4 metadata partials. The broken HTML found in the main output is gone after the fix.

The 2 failing property-corpus tests also fail on main and are fixed by PR 341.

Asciidoctor applies unconstrained emphasis, bold, and highlight inside
backtick code spans, so `__c` and `__b` on one line render as italics
between them, and a glob like `'**/*.md'` renders as bold. Wrap code
spans that hold __, **, or ## in a +...+ passthrough in description,
field, and metadata partials. Live on the git, salesforce, salesforce_cdc,
and microsoft_sql_server_cdc pages.

In metadata partials, also inline-code field names whose description
nests parentheses, and put a blank line before a list glued to the
paragraph above it, which rendered as one paragraph with literal dashes
(http_server, azure_cosmosdb, microsoft_sql_server_cdc).

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Metadata normalization now supports nested parentheses in field bullets and inserts spacing before certain lists. Description, field, and metadata rendering now protect eligible inline code spans that contain emphasis-like markers by wrapping them in AsciiDoc passthrough delimiters. Tests cover both changes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0b5b6

Generated docs for code spans like __count++ may still render incorrectly. The impact is limited to rare cosmetic output, so the change can merge with a small follow-up.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Require paired delimiters before skipping a passthrough.

The | condition skips spans with only a leading or trailing +. For example, both spans in increment `__count++` or `__total++` remain unprotected, although neither is a passthrough.

Require a complete passthrough pair. For literal content that contains plus characters, use an appropriate pass:c[] enclosure instead of single-plus delimiters. Asciidoctor documents this exception explicitly. (docs.asciidoctor.org)

Technical check: code-span passthroughs and metadata lists

Overall: The fix works, but the code it changes no longer produces published output. Unless d-e-m's partial generator is meant to stay as a fallback, I suggest closing this PR.

Superseded

  1. The Connect generator owns these partials now, and it already has this fix. Since this PR opened, feat(rpcn-docs): source connector reference partials from the connect repo #345 and feat(rpcn-docs): source connect reference docs from the release asset #358 merged, and rp-connect-docs#531 (10/10) deleted the generated partials/fields, metadata, and descriptions trees. rp-connect-docs update-docs.yml now runs generate rpcn-connector-docs --no-partials (line 268), which skips the partial run (rpcn-connector-docs-handler.js:1262). Draft pages set hasDescriptionPartial = true for connector page types (generate-rpcn-connector-docs.js:652), so renderConnectDescription isn't reached for them either.

The v4.113.0 redpanda-connect-docs.tar.gz asset already renders every case in the description:

    • fields/inputs/git.adoc:119: `+'.git/**', '**/*.png'+`
    • fields/inputs/salesforce.adoc:65: `+__c+`
    • metadata/inputs/microsoft_sql_server_cdc.adoc:11-13: `+__$start_lsn+` and the related columns, inline-coded
    • metadata/inputs/http_server.adoc:16-18: a blank line before the "added as well:" list

Please close this, or say which code path still needs the d-e-m helpers.

If it merges anyway

  • Typo in the new header comment: normalize-metadata.js:17 reads * * 3. (extra *).
  • CodeRabbit's + boundary guard is still open. It's latent: no code span with a marker in connect 4.113.0's 5,760 descriptions starts or ends with +, and no span that gets wrapped contains one.

What works well

  • The passthrough fixes the pairing bug. In Asciidoctor 2.2.8, x `__c` and `__b` y renders as <code><em>c</code> and <code></em>b</code>. With the wrapping it renders as <code>__c</code> and <code>__b</code>.
  • Dropping the \{ escape inside a wrapped span is correct. `+\{x}+` would render a literal \{x}.
  • Tests pass: 164/164 across description-partials, metadata-partials, and rpcn-connector-summaries.
