Description of Changes

Removed NINGX_REAL_REMOTE_ADDR because it could let clients impersonate another IP address.

Deployments behind a load balancer or ingress must configure NGINX_TRUSTED_PROXIES with only their proxy addresses or networks to preserve client IP addresses. Hostname-like values are rejected.

When NGINX_CUSTOM_FILE=True, configure client-address handling and the other generated nginx settings directly in the mounted configuration.

Screenshot

N/A

- Passed the connection address to the application by default
- Added NGINX_TRUSTED_PROXIES to read X-Forwarded-For from trusted proxies
- Documented that $real_ip and $http_x_forwarded_for can be spoofed

📝 Walkthrough

The Nginx configuration adds an empty NGINX_TRUSTED_PROXIES setting. At startup, the script validates configured proxy addresses or networks and generates real-IP directives. Nginx includes those directives and passes its remote address to WebSocket and uWSGI upstream locations. The documentation describes forwarded-IP handling, custom Nginx configuration requirements, and the effect of trusting a network.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d728f

No confirmed merge-blocking defect remains in the reviewed trusted-proxy changes.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d728f

The generated configuration improves the default by ignoring forwarded client addresses unless explicitly trusted proxies are configured. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Deployments behind proxies must migrate their settings carefully, and custom configurations require independent verification.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A host in an explicitly trusted network that can reach this Nginx instance can assert a forwarded client identity. Because the policy is HTTP-wide, its influence can extend across generated dashboard and API virtual hosts, their applicable IP rules, and forwarded client identity. Broad container-network trust would therefore authorize more than the intended reverse proxy.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected generated paths do not establish a new direct-client spoofing route: an arbitrary request header does not configure trusted peers, the empty policy does not enable real-IP header processing, and the changed forwarding locations use the selected address rather than preserving the supplied forwarded chain. This conclusion does not cover custom configurations or downstream consumers that independently interpret request headers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Custom-file mode executes Nginx before trusted-proxy validation or generated-policy installation. The documentation explicitly assigns these controls to the mounted configuration. Its contents, include overrides, and effective enforcement are unavailable, so equivalent protection cannot be inferred for that mode.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The added test checks rejection of several malformed proxy entries and generation of expected directives. It substitutes both rendering helpers and the Nginx executable, so it does not establish parser compatibility, request-time spoofing resistance, or recovery from interrupted configuration generation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate representative generated configurations with the supported Nginx image and exercise direct requests, trusted and untrusted proxy chains, IPv4/IPv6 inputs, and address-based restrictions. For custom-file deployments, inspect the effective configuration separately rather than treating the environment setting as protection.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the required checklist, issue reference, change summary, and screenshot section. It documents the security rationale, NGINX_TRUSTED_PROXIES requirements, and NGINX_CUSTOM_FILE behavior. Manual testing is marked N/A, which is acceptable for this check.

Full details: Ui Changes, Regression Test, Docs

Explanation

The pull request changes Nginx configuration behavior, not an end-user UI, so screenshots are not required. It adds the regression test TestLocalUtils.test_nginx_trusted_proxies in tests/runtests.py, covering invalid and valid proxy entries and generated real-IP directives. It documents the new NGINX_TRUSTED_PROXIES setting and updates NGINX_CUSTOM_FILE guidance in docs/user/settings.rst.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Add a comment before the validation and real-IP block.

The repository guidelines ask for a comment in shell scripts that explains opaque code. Add a short comment before this block. It must explain three points. set -f stops glob expansion of proxy entries. The warning covers the legacy spoofable values. The directives trust X-Forwarded-For only from listed proxies.

Reject hostname-like trusted proxy values.

deadbeef passes the validator and becomes set_real_ip_from deadbeef;. Nginx 1.31.5 treats values that are not CIDRs as hostnames and resolves them with getaddrinfo. If the value resolves, Nginx trusts the resolved address. This violates the documented IP/network-only contract.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Document the NGINX_CUSTOM_FILE exception.

When NGINX_CUSTOM_FILE=True, the container starts the mounted /etc/nginx/nginx.conf before it validates NGINX_TRUSTED_PROXIES or generates the real-IP directives. The setting therefore does not change the client IP in the custom configuration. Requests through a proxy can use the proxy address instead of the forwarded client address, including for IP allow rules.

When NGINX_CUSTOM_FILE=True, a successful return from nginx -g 'daemon off;' falls through to NGINX_TRUSTED_PROXIES validation. A value such as proxy.internal then exits the script with status 1, although the documented custom-file mode does not use this setting.

Reject invalid CIDR prefixes before generating directives.

192.0.2.10/33 matches the current pattern. The pattern also accepts values such as 192.0.2.10/99, 2001:db8::1/129, and 999.999.999.999/32. These values reach set_real_ip_from and can make Nginx reject the generated configuration. Validate each entry as an IP address or CIDR with valid address and prefix ranges before generating the directives.

[fix] Stopped trusting X-Forwarded-For for the client IP address #716
