🎯 Changes

An ordered window can keep the wrong rows when an adapter unload changes source order during repair retirement. The repair previously cleared the newer invalidation as it finished. This change preserves the remaining repair debt so the next pass revalidates the prefix before publishing the replacement.

The receiving witness starts with five provider rows. Moving row 1 to rank 10 starts a repair. An old acquisition's actual unload then moves the repaired prefix behind an uninstalled row. Before this change, the public window shows row 1 at rank 10 instead of row 3 at rank 3. The repair now pays only its own ordering epoch and preserves newer work through the existing scheduling path.

The same primary oracle also repairs neighboring instrument defects discovered during this investigation. Replay bookkeeping now preserves a deferred graph continuation until a graph pass consumes it or truncate discards it. That correction makes the exact #2296 replay pass, but establishes no production resource leak or public consequence for that report. The request-error checker also requires the originating Error object, including when an acquisition release reports a separate cleanup error.

The no-leak calibration now changes a recorded release observation at the shared comparison, after the same history passes without substitution. It works against source and minified builds without private-member access. Controlled and real-subscription grammars now have distinct replay keys. These oracle repairs retain the primary owner's accepted laws. Only the ordering-debt repair changes production.

🔬 Oracle Coverage

Primary owner: packages/db/tests/query/ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts. The coverage map records both receiving paths and their limits.

  • Law: A completed repair pays only its ordering epoch. A newer qualifying invalidation requires replacement work before coherent publication. Authority: ordered requests and recovery, atomic window publication, and publication law 9. A failed request retains its own Error identity. Cleanup errors change no load result.
  • Reach: Seeded and random campaigns each complete 200 controlled release-invalidation histories and 200 real real-subscription-release histories. They vary indexed/unindexed loading, widths 1/2, and synchronous/asynchronous answers. The receiver uses an actual source Collection, subscription, live-query Collection, and unload callback. It checks progress, exact rows from an independent provider sort, and every replacement publication after drain. Existing request-authority campaigns retain their 10,000-run budgets. The latest source run reaches 3,888/3,872 current-request errors in seeded/random campaigns, including 1,431/1,390 histories with actual cleanup faults.
  • RED: Before production editing, both extended paths fail on unchanged production at seed 20261029, paths 0:0 and 0. The receiver also shows the wrong public row. A later run restores unchanged production and rejects the same defect with the stronger full-publication recorder before final repair adoption. Separately, all 16 Error-substitution calibrations fail under the old checker because it accepts a different Error object.
  • GREEN: The final state owner passes 50/50 tests, and the complete minified dist lane passes 347/347 tests. Scoped types, ESLint, Prettier, pnpm lint:changed, and integration checks pass. The exact Ordered loader retains earlier requests after a newer authoritative read succeeds #2296 seed/path also passes through the replay campaign selector. Guarded seed 20261029/path 0 replays execute exactly one completed history for each of ordered-loader.retirement-invalidation and ordered-loader.retirement-receiver, in source and minified dist. Before the split, the same replay key executes both grammars. This change preserves all oracle budgets and comparisons.
  • Mutant: Restoring the original production debt-clearing rule fails both seeded retirement campaigns. The receiver rejects its progress, public-row, and publication comparisons. Restoring continuation consumption reproduces Ordered loader retains earlier requests after a newer authoritative read succeeds #2296's original ledger assertion. The old message-prefix Error waiver fails all 16 calibrations. Narrowing that waiver to actual cleanup faults still fails eight. A real no-retirement production mutant fails the genuine shared history at the no-leak comparison in both source and rebuilt minified dist.
  • Limits: The receiver covers one qualifying invalidation per unload, finite distinct numeric ranks, ascending order, widths 1/2, one source, and one consumer. It does not combine that callback with failures, reset, disposal, optimistic holds, or multiple invalidations. The observation cut is Collection publication. Framework renders, Effect callbacks, real network resources, and Ordered loader keeps no handle to release a failed request from before a cursor reset #2223 remain separate.

The historical RED command runs from packages/db with unchanged production and the extended oracle:

pnpm exec vitest run --coverage.enabled=false --typecheck.enabled=false --maxWorkers=1 tests/query/ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts -t 'completed repair retirement \(fixed|real subscription \(fixed'

The final GREEN commands run the full owner and minified lane from packages/db, after pnpm --filter @tanstack/db build:minified:

pnpm exec vitest run --coverage.enabled=false --maxWorkers=1 tests/query/ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts
pnpm exec vitest run --config vitest.dist.config.ts --coverage.enabled=false --maxWorkers=1

✅ Checklist

  • I have tested this code locally with pnpm test.
  • Focused oracle suites, scoped types, lint, formatting, integration checks, and size comparison passed.

The full workspace pnpm test command was not run locally. Verification targets the changed loader, its source and minified receiving paths, and the intended combined repairs. Repository-wide CI remains a separate check.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Patch release for @tanstack/db. The loader adds 18 minified bytes. Package gzip changes by +8 bytes and Brotli by -53 bytes. The typical application changes by +7 gzip bytes and +19 Brotli bytes.

Closes #2222.

Related: #2296, whose replay-provenance correction is distinct from the production repair.

Test added 4 commits October 29, 2026 14:20
A release callback can invalidate ordering while a completed bounded repair
retires its old acquisitions. Preserve that newer debt so the next pass repairs
the source prefix before publishing. Also correct replay bookkeeping and enforce
exact request-error identity in the state oracle.

Law: Ordered requests/continuation/recovery and publication law 9 in
packages/db/src/query/live/ARCHITECTURE.md. Retirement pays only its ordering
epoch; a current request keeps its own error despite cleanup faults.
Reach: Controlled and real-subscription retirement campaigns each complete
200 fixed and 200 random histories. Current-request-error reach is 3888/3883,
with cleanup-fault/error reach 1431/1388 in the unchanged 10,000-run campaigns.
RED: R05/R12 run the extended state owner on parent production with maxWorkers=1;
controlled and receiving retirement comparisons fail at seed20261029 paths0:0/0.
E02 selects 'rejects substituted participant errors'; all16 cases reject the
old checker's false acceptance.
GREEN: E14 full state owner50/50, preserving fixed/random budgets; R18 neighbors
83/83, scoped types, lint, format and direct replay pass.
Mutant: R23 original production fails both retirement campaigns and exact public
rows/publications; original checker waiver fails16/16, narrowed waiver8/16.
Limits: Finite numeric ranks, widths1/2, indexed/unindexed, literal/Promise
settlement, one receiving invalidation. No universal provider/framework claim.
Broader pagination extent/work limits and issue2223 are separate.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#2222] requires an ordering invalidation that arrives during repair lease release to keep bounded repair debt. The whole-PR diff changes one hunk in OrderedSourceLoader.finishOrderedPrefixRepair() (packages/db/src/query/live/ordered-source-loader.ts, around lines 762-770). The final move to { kind: 'idle' } now passes this.repairNeedsReplacement() ? this.debt : 'none' as the debt. repairNeedsReplacement() returns true when the work is repair and its epoch differs from orderingInvalidationGeneration, or when debt is full. So a newer invalidation keeps its debt through the final move. loadMore() then tests needsOrderingRepair and, for bounded debt, calls loadOrderedPrefixRepair(). The next scheduled pass therefore issues a read before publication. This matches the issue's suggested compare-the-epoch-before-the-final-transition fix. checkCoherence() accepts the idle state with bounded debt. The witness work is in packages/db/tests/query/ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts. The PR reports its results (50/50 owner tests, 347/347 minified tests). I did not run those tests. The production behavior was confirmed by source reading only.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template with all four sections present: Changes, Oracle Coverage, Checklist, and Release Impact. The Changes section explains the ordering-debt bug, the fix, and the receiving witness. The Oracle Coverage section names the primary owner (ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts), states the violated laws, reach, RED/GREEN results, mutants, and limits, as the template requires for a bug fix. The Checklist and Release Impact sections are filled in and the changeset is noted. Minor gaps: the local test checkbox is unchecked while the body says the full workspace pnpm test was not run, which is disclosed. The description is detailed and dense, but it is not vague or generic.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production change fits #2222. Several test-oracle changes do not implement #2222 and the PR says they serve a different report. (1) The replay-continuation bookkeeping fix (ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts, oracle-config.ts, oracle-replay-manifest.ts) makes the exact #2296 replay pass. The PR states it establishes no production resource leak or public consequence for #2296. (2) The request-error checker change, which requires the originating Error object and adds 16 Error-substitution calibrations, tests cleanup-error identity. #2222 does not require it. (3) The no-leak calibration change and the separate replay-continuation property key are also distinct from the ordering invalidation. The PR links #2296 only as 'Related'. Unlike the production hunk, these changes do not implement any requirement of #2222. The PR does claim they repair instrument defects needed to trust the retirement evidence. The PR gives no concrete evidence that the #2222 witness depends on them, so that claim does not establish scope.

Resolution

Remove the replay-continuation bookkeeping, the request-error Error-identity checker changes with their calibrations, the no-leak calibration change, and the replay-continuation property and manifest entries from this PR. Move them to a separate PR linked to #2296. Alternatively, show concrete evidence that the #2222 retirement-invalidation and retirement-receiver witnesses fail without these changes, and link that evidence in the PR description. Keep the #2222 production hunk and its retirement witness tests.

Comment thread packages/db/tests/query/ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts Outdated
Replace a private-method spy with a retained-release observation passed to the
shared no-leak comparison. The same covering-repair history first runs with
genuine observations. Give the real-subscription arbitrary its own replay
property; preserve the original controlled property and all run/reach budgets.

Law: a completed covering repair retires earlier successful bounded leases.
Authority: live-query ARCHITECTURE, Ordered requests, continuation, and recovery.
Replay coordinates identify one arbitrary and production driver (ORC-007).

Reach: controlled release-invalidation and real-subscription-release each reach
200 histories in each fixed/random campaign, in source and minified dist.

RED: original private-name calibration fails at setup in minified dist; this is
not semantic RED. Original guarded replay emits two executions under the same
key and fails the independent exact-one guard.

GREEN: source owner 50/50; complete minified dist 347/347; both property replays
execute exactly one matching completed history in source and dist. Scoped tsc,
ESLint, Prettier, changed lint, minified public API and four registry checks pass.

Mutant: replace real finite retirement method body with a no-op, rebuild
minified dist, and both source/dist genuine histories reject no leak: requests
[0,1] held after authoritative request2. Restore exact production and rebuild.

Limits: test-only repair; no product behavior, model semantics, input domains,
public observation cuts, replay-continuation policy or budget changes. Existing
receiver limits remain. Full workspace test suite not run locally.

Ordered loader can drop the debt of an invalidation that arrives while a finished repair releases its leases
