What does this do?

  • Adds a sort menu to the Places list view: Popularity (new default) or Distance (former behavior). Selection persisted in Prefs.
  • Scales map markers logarithmically by 30-day pageviews relative to the most popular page in view, so notable places stand out.
  • Geosearch request now includes pvip to fetch pageviews (no extra request).

Why is this needed?

It is useful to quickly find relevant articles / POIs in a geographical area. Concrete example: in Paris, the current distance-only default surfaces mostly street-name history articles rather than the main points of interest.

The sort menu is structured to allow adding more options later.

Geosearch now requests 30-day pageviews per page, summed into a
popularity score. List view gets a sort menu (Popularity / Distance,
defaulting to Popularity) persisted in Prefs. Map markers scale
logarithmically by pageviews relative to the most popular page in
view, so notable places stand out.
