Why are you introducing these changes? (Problem description, related links)

Currently the packit builds are useless in the containerized world, since the container is not built based on the PRs.

What are the changes introduced in this pull request?

  • Created a Containerfile that installs packit repo and all the rpms from it on top of the base container
  • Created a script apply_pr.py that wraps the container creation process and enables generation of the container.

How to test this pull request

Steps to reproduce:

  • Pick a PR, invoke the script
  • foremanctl deploy
  • Observe the foreman instance with the PR applied

Checklist

  • Tests added/updated (if applicable)
  • Documentation updated (if applicable)

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a Containerfile that installs packages from a selected Packit repository and a script that builds the image, then loads it into root’s Podman image store.

Changes: Packit PR image workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and build the Packit image
development/packit/apply_pr.py, development/packit/Containerfile
The script accepts a base image, repository, and PR number. It inspects the base image user and builds the image with those values. The Containerfile installs the DNF COPR command, enables the selected Packit repository for rhel-10-x86_64, upgrades packages, cleans DNF metadata, and switches to the configured user.
Load the image and return command status
development/packit/apply_pr.py
The script pipes the saved image into sudo podman load. It returns subprocess failure codes and reports other OS errors to stderr with status 1.

Would it be possible to put in multiple packit-built rpms from different repositories at the same time? Or would users be expected to "chain" this, building a couple of intermediate images in the process?

For now I have created the process to chain the builds. I suppose if we do something more complicated, we can also do it in a single step.
Edit: It will require parsing arrays inside the RUN statement in the Containerfile. I think it can become a bit messy. What is your concern with stacking the PRs one on top the other?

Since this isn't in draft, I assume this is not a PoC, in which case can you modify this to follow our forge paradigm?

can you modify this to follow our forge paradigm?

Forge is not available on the CI machines that will need to run it. The idea is to use the "production-like" setup, which means installing foremanctl from the repos, and there is no forge there.

parser.add_argument("--base-image", default="quay.io/foreman/foreman:nightly")
parser.add_argument("--repo-org", default="theforeman")
parser.add_argument("--repo-name", default="foreman")
parser.add_argument("--pr", required=True, help="Packit pull request number")

Can we have option to add multiple PRs of multiple Repo

No, not really. Not until we have source-based containers.

The old workaround still remains - open a dummy PR which includes all the changes you want to test together and let packit build an rpm out of that.

Eh sorry, I somehow skipped the "of multiple repo" part. Multiple PRs of multiple repos seem to be doable, see #934 (review) and #934 (comment)

Yes, just run the process multiple times - it will build the containers one on top the other.

Let's start with the minimal setup, and get it in. We can add a json option and a loop to the script later.

Test Ack: Tested and it works as expected:

napathak@napathak-thinkpadt14gen5:~/foremanctl/foremanctl$ ./development/packit/apply_pr.py --repo-name hammer-cli-foreman-google --pr 19
napathak@napathak-thinkpadt14gen5:~/foremanctl/foremanctl$ source .venv/bin/activate
(.venv) napathak@napathak-thinkpadt14gen5:~/foremanctl/foremanctl$ ./foremanctl deploy --initial-admin-username=admin --initial-admin-password=changeme --tuning development
[vagrant@quadlet ~]$ rpm -qa | grep -i "google"

Works as expected

I am missing from this what the workflows or use cases are on how this script should be used. How would CI use this? How would an contributor use this? Do I run it locally? Adding documentation would help.

Adding documentation would help.

Once we agree on the implementation I will add proper documentation, sure!

As for the use cases: I think the main goal of this is testing a PR. I can see a couple of possible use cases:

  1. Testing in local environment, without a local container: a user creates an empty box, copies the script source to the empty box, runs the script, runs foremanctl.
  2. Testing in local environment, with a local container: a user downloads the script locally, the user runs the script and generates a local container, creates an empty box, copies the container to the box, runs foremanctl.
  3. CI (automated) testing: the user triggers a CI process, the CI creates a controller box, the CI then creates the foremanctl (it may be also the controller, then no need for a second machine here) box, the CI copies the script to the foremanctl box, the CI runs the script on the foremanctl box, the CI invokes foremanctl on the foremanctl box.

I think those are the scenarios I could think of.
I think all the scenarios that are mentioned here would not install foremanctl from source, so forge would not be available (at least in the current design).
