Four categories of generated-but-unused certificate material, established while auditing PR theforeman#852's certificate inventory: - server-ca.crt: dead since server_ca_certificate/client_ca_certificate were pointed at ca_bundle instead. Removed from both ca.yml's single-scheme and multi-scheme paths, and from the auth-bundle tarball (auth_bundle role and playbook), which packaged the same now-unused file for capsules. - localhost's bare and per-algorithm certs (localhost.crt/.key, localhost-client.crt/.key, localhost-{type}.crt/.key): no consumer anywhere. Removed localhost from certificates_hostnames entirely, which also stops the per-algorithm loop from running for it. - candlepin-client.crt/.key: candlepin never makes outbound calls to Foreman, so its client cert has no consumer. Introduced certificates_client_hostnames (certificates_hostnames minus candlepin) and gated issue.yml's client cert block on it. iop-core-gateway's per-algorithm certs have the same generated-but- unused problem but are intentionally left alone here pending further investigation into whether iop_gateway should instead be updated to consume them. When
certificates_sourceiscustom_server, the CLI requires both--certificate-server-certificateand--certificate-server-key. These options are not persisted. Therefore, the documented renewal command does not provide the inputs required to package updated custom server certificates.Suggested fix

Amended all the changes, I also restructured the whole chapter I think bullets are much more explicit and friendly for reviewers, sorry! I also added two more commits which drop the unused resources, but I just realized that @pablomh has some work in progress branch so I will happily drop these commits from this PR which I would love to focus solely on documentation. |

I will drop the last two commits after the review. |
localhost never needed its own CA-issued server/client certificate
pair: it's already covered as a SAN on the candlepin and
iop-core-gateway certs, which is how certs/iop-core-gateway resolve
local connections. The standalone localhost.{crt, key} and
localhost-client.{crt,key} were dead output from a now-removed loop
entry, with no consumer anywhere in the codebase.
- Drop the vestigial 'localhost' entry from certificates_internal_hostnames.
- Remove the dead localhost_*/localhost_client_* vars.
- Remove the dead migrate_foreman_installer step copying the old
installer's localhost-tomcat.{crt,key}.
- Add a cleanup task to remove any stale localhost.* files left on
disk by a previous foremanctl version, in any deployment mode.
- Drop the corresponding dead test coverage.
Finding originally surfaced in theforeman#852 while
auditing the certificate inventory for SAT-50554; picked up here
since it overlaps with this branch's certificate work.
Verified via `satellitectl deploy` on the purple test environment:
full run completed with 0 failures, and the new cleanup task behaved
correctly (idempotent no-op, since purple's current cert set predates
the files ever being generated.

When I first read this, I was like "huh, why/how are those certs used during provisioning", but you mean "What creates those certs". Maybe change this to "Source" or something, so it doesn't clash with terms used somewhere else in the project.

| After deployment, files are stored under `/var/lib/foremanctl/certs/`. `deploy` creates or installs certificates for the main Foreman host and its internal services (`candlepin` and `iop-core-gateway`). `auth-bundle` creates certificates for a secondary proxy when run. The source notes below distinguish certificates generated by foremanctl from files supplied with `custom_server`. CSR files are excluded. |

I'd prefer if we'd call this "internal CA" or "default CA".
Later on you say "generated CA", which is confusing if you never defined such a CA :)

Rebased, good points.
I am ignoring this as I just heard on our scrum that someone else is taking a look. I could not find any PR yet, that would be something like: |

This expands the always-sensitive certificates portion of our docs as requested in https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/SAT-50554
The need for this is likely security audit reason, therefore, I am taking a strict approach here - listing everything that is available on the host and trying to explain where these certificates are used. I did my best guess here, so please correct me if I am wrong.
Once this is merged, I will proceed with pulling the same information into foreman-documentation.
I reviewed this against deployments both in default and custom cert mode. In both cases the full list of file was:
Couple of small fixes alongside which I spotted when I was reviewing the doc, but these are irrelevant and I can drop them.
