Precision 5820 Tower Workstation Notes

This machine needed a few tweaks to get Arch Linux running smoothly on it. I am adding these notes as a reminder of the issues I ran into, and the additional configuration changes I had to make to fix them.

Setting up disk encryption

Encrypting an Entire System - LVM on LUKS

EDAC errors spamming the login console

Blacklist the module causing the errors by adding blacklist skx_edac to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf

No network link over ethernet occasionally upon boot

Add this option to the netctl profile for the ethernet connection: SkipNoCarrier=yes

NVMe SSD becoming unavailable, causing filesystems to remount as read-only

Add kernel options to the boot loader entry for Arch at /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf:

pcie_aspm=off nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0

Enable TRIM support, and disable the read and write workqueues on an existing encrypted volume cryptlvm:

# cryptsetup --perf-no_read_workqueue --perf-no_write_workqueue --allow-discards --persistent refresh cryptlvm

Enable periodic TRIM, which runs fstrim once per week:

# systemctl enable fstrim.timer
