Fixes #1935

Summary

Adds the -crawl-strategy (-cst) command-line option with predefined presets for headless crawling:

  • fast: Prioritizes speed (domcontentloaded page load strategy, 1s DOM wait, depth 2, 500ms interaction settle, 1 scroll step, 3 onclick links).
  • balanced: Default balanced preset (heuristic page load strategy, 3s DOM wait, depth 4, 1.5s interaction settle, 2 scroll steps, 10 onclick links).
  • thorough: Complete and deep exploration (networkidle page load strategy, 5s DOM wait, depth 6, 3s interaction settle, 5 scroll steps, 25 onclick links).

Changes

  • Added CrawlStrategy field to types.Options and registered -crawl-strategy (-cst) in cmd/katana/main.go.
  • Automatically enables headless mode when -crawl-strategy is provided without an explicit mode flag.
  • Validates the strategy preset and applies preset parameters while preserving any explicitly set command-line flags.
  • Added comprehensive unit tests in internal/runner/options_test.go covering each preset, override behavior, and validation errors.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a crawl-strategy option with fast, balanced, and thorough presets for headless crawling.
    • Presets configure crawling behavior, while explicitly set page-load and wait-time options take precedence.
    • Strategy names are accepted regardless of capitalization or surrounding whitespace; unsupported values are rejected.

Walkthrough

The CLI adds -crawl-strategy (-cst) for the fast, balanced, and thorough presets. Option validation normalizes supported values, rejects unsupported values, and applies preset defaults to headless crawl settings.

Headless Crawl Strategy Presets

Layer / File(s) Summary
Strategy option and CLI flag
pkg/types/options.go, cmd/katana/main.go
Options gains the CrawlStrategy field. The CLI exposes it through -crawl-strategy and -cst.
Validation and preset application
internal/runner/options.go, internal/runner/options_test.go
Validation normalizes supported preset values, rejects other values, and enables headless mode when neither headless mode is selected. Presets set page-load strategy, DOM wait, interaction depth and settle time, scroll steps, and onclick-link limits when their override conditions apply. Tests cover preset values, explicit overrides, and invalid input.

The new -crawl-strategy presets fail outright when combined with hybrid headless mode (-hh). They also silently override explicitly chosen values that equal a default, such as disabling scrolling. Fix both before merging.

Explanation

Issue [#1935] requires the -crawl-strategy option and the fast, balanced, and thorough headless presets. The diff adds the option, validation, headless auto-enable, preset values, and unit tests. The current PR intent also requires explicit flags to remain unchanged. The implementation cannot distinguish explicit default-valued flags from unset values. For example, -pls heuristic or -dwt 5 is overwritten by fast or thorough because those values match the configured defaults. The tests do not cover these cases.

Resolution

Track whether each command-line option was explicitly set, or use equivalent flag-set information, before applying a preset. Preserve explicitly set values, including values equal to defaults. Add tests for explicit heuristic and 5 overrides and for the other default-valued preset fields.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 66.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 4 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Preserve flags explicitly set to a default value.

If a user supplies -cst fast -page-load-strategy heuristic, this condition replaces the explicit heuristic value with domcontentloaded. The same value-based approach replaces other explicit defaults, including -max-scroll-steps 0, which is documented to disable scrolling. Track whether a flag was set instead of treating equality with a default as proof that the user omitted it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not assign pure-headless scroll steps in hybrid mode.

With -hh -cst fast, the preset leaves Headless false but sets MaxScrollSteps to 1. The later validation then rejects the run because positive scroll steps require pure headless mode. The balanced and thorough presets fail for the same reason, so none can run with the explicitly selected hybrid mode. Skip the scroll setting in hybrid mode, or resolve mode compatibility before applying the preset. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The same three setups are flags katana already has. A preset cannot tell a flag you passed from a flag left at its default, so -cst fast -pls heuristic is rewritten, and -hh cannot be combined with the scroll steps the preset turns on.

Shell aliases keep each choice explicit:

alias katana-fast='katana -hl -interactive -pls domcontentloaded -dwt 1 -interaction-depth 2 -interaction-settle 500ms -max-scroll-steps 1'
alias katana-balanced='katana -hl -interactive -pls heuristic -dwt 3 -interaction-depth 4 -interaction-settle 1500ms -max-scroll-steps 2'
alias katana-thorough='katana -hl -interactive -pls networkidle -dwt 5 -interaction-depth 6 -interaction-settle 3s -max-scroll-steps 5'

Leave -max-scroll-steps off when you use -hh. Positive scroll steps require pure headless mode. There is no flag for the onclick cap, so that stays at 10.

Closing in favor of the aliases.
