Summary

Fixes #1953

When crawling with the standard engine and custom headers are provided (-H):

  • Previously, Go's HTTP client copied all non-standard headers from prior requests across redirect hops unconditionally, leaking sensitive credentials (such as -H "X-Api-Key: ..." or custom session tokens) when following redirects to external/out-of-scope hosts.
  • With this fix, CheckRedirect validates redirect target URLs against the session's ScopeManager rules. When a redirect points outside the crawl scope, all custom headers configured via -H are stripped.
  • When redirects stay inside the crawl scope, custom headers continue to be forwarded as expected.

Changes

  • Updated BuildHttpClient in pkg/engine/common/http.go to accept an optional ScopeValidator callback and strip custom -H headers in CheckRedirect whenever the destination is out of scope.
  • Updated NewCrawlSessionWithURL in pkg/engine/common/base.go to pass a session scope validator backed by s.Options.ScopeManager.Validate(u, hostname).
  • Added unit tests in pkg/engine/common/redirect_headers_test.go verifying that custom headers are preserved on in-scope redirects and removed on out-of-scope redirects.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Custom headers, including API keys and cookies, are no longer sent when a redirect leads outside the crawl session’s configured scope. They continue to be sent for redirects that remain within scope.
    • Crawl sessions without a configured scope retain their existing redirect behavior, and their custom headers continue to be handled as before. These changes help prevent sensitive request information from being forwarded to out-of-scope destinations.

projectdiscovery#1953)

- Validate redirect target URLs against ScopeManager rules for the session root hostname
- Remove custom headers configured via -H when following redirects out of crawl scope
- Retain custom headers when redirect target remains within allowed scope
- Add regression tests covering in-scope and out-of-scope redirects

Walkthrough

The crawl session passes a scope validator to the HTTP client when a scope manager is configured. The client retains custom headers for redirects that pass validation and removes them when validation rejects the redirect URL.

Changes

Scope-aware redirect headers

Layer / File(s) Summary
Create and pass the scope validator
pkg/engine/common/http.go, pkg/engine/common/base.go
BuildHttpClient accepts optional scope validators. When a scope manager is configured, NewCrawlSessionWithURL creates a validator that checks URLs against the session hostname and passes it to the client.
Apply redirect header policy
pkg/engine/common/http.go, pkg/engine/common/redirect_headers_test.go
When the first supplied validator rejects a redirect URL, the client removes each parsed custom-header name from the request. Tests check that X-Api-Key is retained for an in-scope redirect and that X-Api-Key and Cookie are removed for an out-of-scope redirect.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#1953] requires -H headers to remain on in-scope redirects and to be removed on out-of-scope redirects. BuildHttpClient applies the optional ScopeValidator to each redirect target and removes parsed custom headers plus Cookie when validation fails. NewCrawlSessionWithURL supplies validation from ScopeManager.Validate. The added tests cover both redirect cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue [#1953]. http.go filters redirect headers, base.go connects filtering to crawl scope, and redirect_headers_test.go verifies the required behavior. Cookie removal supports the same credential-protection objective.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 3 files.

A rabbit checks each path with care,
In-scope headers travel there.
Out-of-scope, they stay behind,
Safe redirects are clearly signed.

Addressed review suggestions:

  • Handled error return values for deferred resp.Body.Close in tests to adhere to errcheck linter rules.
  • Added explicit req.Header.Del("Cookie") on out-of-scope redirects to guarantee jar-sourced session cookies are also cleared when following cross-scope redirects.
  • All linter, security, and functional tests pass cleanly.
