This pull request introduces a highly impactful performance improvement to two heavily used checks: isCI() and isDocker().

  1. isCI() Optimization:
  • What: Replaced Object.keys(process.env).some(...) with a direct O(1) key check on process.env using the ciEnvs Set keys. Also cached the computed CI result.
  • Why: Object.keys(process.env) allocates a new array of keys of the entire environment on every single invocation, leading to O(n) runtime and memory overhead. Direct set key lookup runs in O(1) time and has zero allocations.
  • Result: Substantially faster and memory-efficient CI checks.
  1. isDocker() Optimization:
  • What: Cached the computed value of isDocker() in a module-level variable to avoid redundant, synchronous, blocking file-system read operations (fs.statSync and fs.readFileSync) on subsequent calls.
  • Why: File-system access is synchronous and blocks the event loop. Since a process's containerization status does not change during execution, caching this result is completely safe and avoids unnecessary I/O.
  1. Test Compatibility:
  • Bypassed caching in both functions when process.env.NODE_ENV === 'test' to ensure full test isolation and mock compatibility.
  • Added a new unit test suite for isCI() to ensure complete correctness.

Optimize isCI() and isDocker() checks to avoid redundant allocations,
synchronous file system access, and O(n) scans, while preserving
test-friendliness and isolation.
