Description of Changes

Separates source-level QA from generated documentation validation so contributors can run fast checks without building all documentation versions and formats. Adds a post-build target for link and PDF validation, and updates CI to run it after the production build.

📝 Walkthrough

The CI workflow now runs quick QA checks, a production documentation build, and post-build link and PDF validation as separate steps. The new build-qa-check Makefile target runs the build-validation script. The quick-check script runs Prettier on tracked CSS, JavaScript, Markdown, and YAML files. The README documents the QA prerequisites and commands.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f4d81

This change splits the quick QA checks from the post-build link and PDF validation. The remaining issues are narrow gaps in the new validation script and README. The validation server can be reached from other hosts and silently tolerates a port conflict. Link coverage is shallow, and a restricted-version build is checked against the wrong path. The pdfinfo requirement is undocumented. None of these affect the documentation site itself, and the default CI flow works. They are worth fixing, but the PR is mergeable with owner awareness.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes all required sections, checklist responses, change summary, and screenshot status. It does not identify an existing issue or list the exact QA and build commands with their results, but the description is otherwise complete and relevant.

Full details: Ui Changes, Regression Test, Docs

Explanation

PASS — The pull request changes CI, Make targets, and QA scripts. It does not change an end-user UI. The CI/QA refactor is exempt from the regression-test requirement. The new build-qa-check workflow is documented in README.rst, including its required tools and usage.

Review comments at @README.rst:
- Around line 200-204: Update the QA prerequisites section in the README to
document that PDF validation in run-build-checks requires pdfinfo from the
Poppler utilities, and include the Debian/Ubuntu installation command shown in
the review.

Review comments at @run-build-checks:
- Line 8: Update the `http.server` command in the validation script to bind to
`127.0.0.1`, and set `BASE_URL` to use the same address so the generated build
is only served locally during validation.
- Around line 8-10: Update the Python HTTP server startup check around the
background server and pid assignment to detect startup failure and stop the
script before crawling; ensure the link check cannot proceed against an
unrelated service already using port 8001.
- Around line 15-16: Set an explicit crawl depth on the pylinkvalidate.py
command in run-build-checks so the link check reaches pages beyond the default
first level; choose a depth that covers the longest link chain in the generated
documentation.
- Line 15: Update the build-qa-check flow to pass VERSION into run-build-checks,
and update the pylinkvalidate.py URL construction to use that version,
defaulting to dev when VERSION is unset. Preserve the existing /dev/ behavior
for unrestricted builds.

The reviewed tree has no tracked JSON files, so omitting *.json does not leave any current JSON file unchecked. The proposed change is not required for this checkout.

45-52: 🔒 Security & Privacy

The missing permissions block is pre-existing. The merge-base workflow already checked out github.event.pull_request.head.sha and executed repository-controlled commands. This PR only separates the existing QA/build workflow.

The repository does not establish that pull-request runs currently receive write permissions, and no explicit project requirement mandates this block. The claimed new security exposure is therefore unsubstantiated.

Fix ReStructuredText Formatting QA Error

Hello @nemesifier,
(Analysis for commit 2e41302)

  • Code Style/QA: The ReStructuredText check failed because README.rst could be reformatted.
  • Fix: Run openwisp-qa-format locally to automatically format your ReStructuredText and other files, then commit and push the changes.

Documentation PDF Generation Build Failure

Hello @nemesifier,
(Analysis for commit f4d81ab)

  • Build/Infrastructure/Other: The PDF documentation build failed because ./docs/26.09/OpenWISP-26.09.pdf is corrupted or empty (Syntax Error: Document stream is empty).
  • Fix: Rebuild the documentation locally using make docs or the appropriate documentation build target, verify that the generated PDF is valid, and commit the updated PDF file.
