Why

  • swift test runs the Swift Testing suites in parallel. Run that way, the suite has crashed inside AppKit/InputMethodKit on an unchanged main: one run in eight, as measured in Expose two-way editor focus #175. Serially it held ten runs in ten there.
  • actions/checkout@v4 targets Node.js 20. The runners have deprecated it and were already forcing it onto Node.js 24 (annotation on the last main run).

What

  • CI runs swift test --no-parallel. The serial run takes about 8 s locally (600 tests in 78 suites), so the parallel one saves nothing.
  • actions/checkout@v5 (runs on Node 24).
  • CONTRIBUTING names the same command, so a local run and CI agree.

Checks

  • swift test --no-parallel on this branch: 600 tests in 78 suites, all pass.
  • This PR's own CI run is the check for the workflow change.

swift test runs the Swift Testing suites in parallel, and run that way the
suite has crashed inside AppKit and InputMethodKit on an unchanged main, one
run in eight (measured in #175); serially it held ten runs in ten there. The
serial run takes about eight seconds, so nothing is saved by the parallel
one. CONTRIBUTING names the same command, so a local run and CI agree.

actions/checkout moves to v5: v4 targets Node.js 20, which the runners have
deprecated and were already forcing onto Node.js 24.
