DGX Spark Inference Stack

Serves LLMs from one NVIDIA DGX Spark over an OpenAI-compatible API. A model starts on the first request for it, holds the GPU alone, and stops after 20 minutes idle. One small utility model can stay loaded next to it for light work such as session titles.

This is a hobby project for a single DGX Spark. Two-node setups are untested.

How it works

An nginx gateway on port 8009 takes every request. A request validator checks the API key, normalizes the body and asks the waker service to start the requested model. The waker starts the model container and waits until it is healthy. If another main model holds the GPU, the client gets HTTP 429 with headers that say which model and when it frees up. Details: docs/architecture.md.

Requirements

  • NVIDIA DGX Spark (GB10). Tested on DGX OS 7 (Ubuntu 24.04).
  • Docker with Compose v2.20 or later and the NVIDIA Container Toolkit.
  • jq, curl and Node.js 20 or later for the scripts in tools/.
  • An NVIDIA NGC account for the base images. Register at the NGC Catalog, then run docker login nvcr.io. NGC is not available in sanctioned countries.
  • Disk for weights under ./models: about 2 GB to 80 GB per model.
  • For qwen3.8-flash-next-nvfp4 only: io_uring enabled on the host (cat /proc/sys/kernel/io_uring_disabled prints 0). The model's container runs a seccomp profile that allows io_uring. Keep the kernel patched: io_uring is a common source of kernel exploits. See docs/security.md.

Install

1. Clone and create the runtime directories

git clone <repository-url>
cd dgx-spark-inference-stack
mkdir -p models manual_download/openai_gpt-oss-encodings_fix

2. Download the GPT-OSS tokenizer files

The GPT-OSS image build copies these in and fails without them.

wget https://openaipublic.blob.core.windows.net/encodings/cl100k_base.tiktoken \
  -O manual_download/openai_gpt-oss-encodings_fix/cl100k_base.tiktoken
wget https://openaipublic.blob.core.windows.net/encodings/o200k_base.tiktoken \
  -O manual_download/openai_gpt-oss-encodings_fix/o200k_base.tiktoken

3. Build a runtime image

The models run on three images. A model starts only if its image is built locally. The GPT-OSS image is one command and takes about 20 minutes:

docker build -t vllm-node-mxfp4 -f custom-docker-containers/vllm-node-mxfp4/Dockerfile .

The default model qwen3.8-27b-nvfp4-dflash2 and the utility helper need vllm-node-dflash2; the Gemma models and qwen3.8-flash-next-nvfp4 need vllm-node-b12x. Both builds are in docs/runtime-baseline.md.

4. Download the weights

Model containers have no internet access. Download each model's weights before its first request. --list shows every model, whether its weights are present and whether its image is built. Set HF_TOKEN for gated repositories.

bash tools/download-weights.sh --list
bash tools/download-weights.sh gpt-oss-20b

5. Start the stack

# Gateway, validator and waker. Models stay down until requested.
docker compose up -d

# Create the containers of the models you built and downloaded, without starting them.
docker compose --profile models up --no-start --no-build vllm-oss20b

The service names are the container values in models.json. Once all three images are built, drop the service name to create every model container.

First request

The gateway listens on 127.0.0.1:8009 only. For remote access, forward the port over SSH: see docs/security.md.

curl -X POST http://localhost:8009/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer ${VLLM_API_KEY:-63TestTOKEN0REPLACEME}" \
  -d '{"model": "gpt-oss-20b", "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello!"}]}'

The first request starts the model and can take several minutes. Before you forward the port to other machines, set your own VLLM_API_KEY in a .env file at the repo root and run both commands from step 5 again.

Check a model's chat, streaming and tool calls through the gateway:

bash tools/test-lane.sh gpt-oss-20b
