This pull request introduces improved handling for the macOS network extension when it is installed but disabled in System Settings. Now, the app will detect this state, prompt the user to enable the extension, and update the UI and workflow accordingly. The changes span both the Flutter front-end and the macOS system extension manager, ensuring users receive clear instructions and the app responds correctly when the extension needs to be manually enabled.

macOS Network Extension Enablement Handling

  • Added a new requiresEnable status to SystemExtensionStatus and ExtensionStatus to represent when the extension is installed but disabled in System Settings. [1] [2]
  • Updated the Swift system extension manager to detect when an activation attempt completes as a no-op (i.e., the extension remains disabled), and to report the new requiresEnable status. This includes logic to snapshot the installed extension set and compare it on subsequent checks. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Flutter UI/UX Improvements for Extension Enablement

  • The macOS extension dialog now displays a specific message and updates the action button label when the extension needs to be enabled, guiding the user to System Settings. The dialog also listens for window focus events to re-check the extension status when the user returns. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
  • VPN start actions (from dialogs and system tray) now check for the extension's readiness and prompt the enablement dialog if needed, preventing failed VPN connections due to a disabled extension. [1] [2]

General Code and UI Cleanups

  • Minor code formatting and refactoring in dialogs and system tray provider for readability and consistency. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

These changes ensure that users are correctly informed and guided when the network extension is disabled, reducing confusion and support issues on macOS.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added guidance for enabling Lantern’s network extension in macOS System Settings when it needs to be turned on.
    • The extension setup dialog refreshes its status when you return to Lantern and provides instructions suited to the extension’s current state.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Lantern now checks that the macOS network extension is ready before starting the VPN, preventing repeated activation attempts when the extension needs to be enabled.

Walkthrough

The change distinguishes an installed but disabled macOS system extension from other extension states. It updates reconciliation, extension status messages and dialog actions, and checks extension readiness before starting the VPN.

Changes: macOS Extension Enablement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reconcile disabled extensions
macos/Runner/VPN/SystemExtensionManager.swift, macos/Runner/VPN/SystemExtensionSmokeCommand.swift, macos/RunnerTests/RunnerTests.swift
Reconciliation tracks installed descriptors across activation attempts. It returns requiresEnable when a retry sees the same disabled set, and uses enable when activation is needed. Smoke status handling and tests cover the new status and behavior.
Display and refresh extension status
lib/core/models/macos_extension_state.dart, lib/features/macos_extension/macos_extension_dialog.dart, assets/locales/en.po, test/macos_extension_state_test.dart
The Dart model parses requiresEnable. The dialog refreshes extension status when its window regains focus and displays the disabled-extension message and System Settings action for that status.
Gate VPN startup on extension readiness
lib/core/widgets/censored_dialog.dart, lib/features/system_tray/provider/system_tray_notifier.dart
The censored dialog opens the macOS extension dialog before starting the VPN when the extension is not ready. The system tray does not start the VPN when its extension check fails.

What changed in this PR

This PR adds an explicit disabled-extension state to Lantern’s macOS setup flow, guiding users to System Settings instead of repeatedly attempting activation.

Changes:

  • Detect unchanged disabled extensions after activation attempts and expose requiresEnable to Flutter and smoke commands.
  • Add enablement instructions, refresh status on window focus, and gate additional VPN start actions on extension readiness.
  • Add Swift reconciliation tests and Dart status-parsing coverage.

Add a 22) arm to the preflight exit-code handler.

run_system_extension_preflight in .github/scripts/macos_smoke_suite.sh maps exit codes 20 and 21 to actionable messages. Exit code 22, which requiresEnable now produces, falls to the default branch. That branch prints System extension preflight failed with exit code 22. The output gives no instruction to enable the extension. The JSON line with "status":"requiresEnable" is printed by cat "$output", but the wrapper does not parse it.

Add a manager-level test for the disabled-activation snapshot.

The reconciler test at macos/RunnerTests/RunnerTests.swift:509-522 passes activationAttemptedOver: [disabled] directly to SystemExtensionReconciler.reconcile. No test in macos/RunnerTests drives SystemExtensionManager. The snapshot write at macos/Runner/VPN/SystemExtensionManager.swift:279-281 is therefore not exercised. Removing that assignment would leave the suite passing, while the repeated-activation flow it supports would break.

Add a test that drives the manager through the full flow:

  1. Call request(_:foundProperties:) with the .reconcile context and a bundled extension that needs activation.
  2. Complete the .activate request.
  3. Call request(_:foundProperties:) with the .inspectStatus context. The installed extension is the same disabled descriptor.
  4. Assert that the status is .requiresEnable.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the disabled-activation snapshot when a failure does not involve an activation.

settleDisabledActivation passes every failure to SystemExtensionDisabledBaseline.resolve as .failed. The resolver returns nil for that outcome even when state?.activatedOver is nil. A failed status query or manual deactivation therefore clears the snapshot. The next reconcile then sees an installed, disabled extension with no baseline. It returns updatePending and submits one more activation over the same set.

The consequence is smaller than a loop. After one resubmitted no-op activation completes or cancels, the snapshot is set again and requiresEnable returns. Only the incidental failure's next reconcile costs one extra activation.

A narrow fix limits the clear to failures of an attempted activation:

macos/Runner/VPN/SystemExtensionManager.swift:287-288
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Show the Settings action for a disabled extension at startup.

At startup, the Flutter notifier calls isSystemExtensionInstalled() from build(). On macOS, that call reaches checkInstallationStatus(), which uses the .inspectStatus context. The status change publishes updatePending for an installed, disabled extension and submits no activation request. The dialog shows an install action for that state, not the System Settings action. The state stays until the user presses the install button.

This is not a permanent stall. One click recovers the state, but the dialog guides the user to the wrong action until then.

Possible remedy

Choose one behavior for inspect-only queries on a disabled extension:

  • Make one activation attempt on that path, so the status can resolve to requiresEnable at startup.
  • Keep the inspect-only behavior and map updatePending for this case to the Settings action in the dialog.

The inspected source does not establish which option is safe. No diff is proposed.

Add a test case with the uninstalling row first.

The new test testReconcileRequiresEnableWhenDisabledCopySitsBesideUninstallingRow passes installed: [disabled, uninstalling] in both calls. No test in the file passes the reverse order. A reconciler that checks only installed.first for the disabled copy would still pass this test. It would fail when the uninstalling row comes first.

The current reconciler does not depend on that order for this path. disabledCopy uses installed.contains, and sameSet compares counts and membership. Both results are the same for either order. The gap is in test coverage only. No production behavior changes.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The new disabled-copy detection runs after a set-wide isAwaitingUserApproval check. An approval-pending stale row may prevent this branch from reporting that the matching copy needs enabling.

The user may be sent to approve a stale extension instead of being told to enable the matching copy.

This can occur when: The installed set contains a matching disabled copy, an uninstalling row, and an approval-pending stale row.
