This pull request adds support for handling "web licensing" deep links and improves the formatting and validation of license keys throughout the app. The changes include recognizing new deep link formats, updating the license key input and validation logic, and introducing utility functions and tests for license key processing.

Deep link and navigation support:

  • Added new intent filters in AndroidManifest.xml to handle https://lantern.io/web-licensing and lantern://web-licensing deep links, enabling the app to be opened directly from the website's post-purchase page. [1] [2]
  • Updated the app's deep link handler to parse the license key from these new deep links and navigate to the LanternProLicense screen with the key pre-filled.

License key handling and formatting:

  • Refactored ResellerCodeFormatter into a general-purpose license key formatter, and added utility functions (isWebLicenseKey, licenseKeyCode, formatLicenseKey) to detect, clean, and format license keys, including support for "PRO" prefixed/suffixed keys.
  • Updated the LanternProLicense widget to accept a licenseKey parameter, pre-fill the input field, and validate license keys using the new utility functions. Also increased the input max length to accommodate formatted keys with a "PRO" marker. [1] [2] [3]

Routing updates:

  • Modified the app's router (router.gr.dart) to support passing the licenseKey parameter to the LanternProLicense screen, updating its arguments and equality/hash logic accordingly. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Testing:

  • Added comprehensive unit tests for the new license key utility functions and the formatter, covering detection, formatting, and cursor management.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for opening web license links from HTTPS URLs and lantern:// links.
    • License links can prefill the license entry screen with a formatted key. License keys are normalized and grouped for easier entry, with improved cursor positioning.
    • License keys are carried through email and OAuth authentication before activation.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Server error messages are now displayed more clearly when available.
    • License activation uses the provided email address when available, with the signed-in address as a fallback.

lantern://web-licensing?code=<key> opens the Lantern Pro License screen with
the key filled in. The license field keeps the PRO prefix or suffix of website
keys as its own group and counts the 25 characters after it.

📝 Walkthrough

The app adds Android web-licensing link filters and passes license keys through authentication routes to the license page. It formats and validates license keys, updates activation email selection, and extracts server-provided error messages.

Changes: Web license flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
License key formatting
lib/core/utils/formatter.dart, test/core/utils/formatter_test.dart
Adds shared helpers to normalize, detect, validate, and format license keys. Formatting handles PRO markers and cursor placement. Tests cover these behaviors.
License route and prefill
lib/core/router/router.gr.dart, lib/features/auth/add_email.dart, lib/features/auth/confirm_email.dart, lib/features/auth/lantern_pro_license.dart
Passes an optional license key through authentication routes. The license page formats and validates a prefilled key. Activation uses the supplied email when nonempty, or the provider email otherwise, for activation and password creation.
Web licensing link entry
android/app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml, lib/lantern_app.dart
Registers HTTPS and custom-scheme intent filters. _pushWithHome can replace a same-named route that is already on top.

Server error messages

Layer / File(s) Summary
Server error message extraction
lib/core/extensions/error.dart
Extracts nonempty text after received bad response: before VPN error classification.

Possibly related PRs

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8bb1c

The web-licensing links the PR registers do not open or prefill the license screen. The new replace-if-on-top option is also never used, so a second link is ignored while the license screen is open. Add the deep-link branch and enable replacement before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ab141

The new licensing links bypass the existing account-readiness checks, and custom-scheme delivery can expose a license key to another installed application. Activation still requires user submission. Unauthorized redemption or account takeover has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new external caller omits the account-readiness precondition enforced by the existing Plans entry. It can construct the license page with an empty provider email during loading or anonymous use and always supplies an empty authentication code. If activation succeeds, that empty code selects the branch that skips password/setup handling. This establishes a client-side account-lifecycle bypass, not proof that the backend permits unauthorized or incorrectly bound redemption.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The new lantern://web-licensing?code=... contract transports a license credential through an unverified custom scheme. An installed application registering the same scheme could receive a fallback link if selected by the platform or user. The verified HTTPS alternative mitigates its own delivery path but does not protect custom-scheme delivery. Credential interception is the inferred exposure; successful redemption by another account depends on backend rules that were not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported attack scope is the license credential and account activation associated with an individual link delivery. A malicious sender can supply prefill content, and a competing installed scheme handler could intercept custom-scheme delivery. The inspected changes do not establish administrative privilege, cross-tenant redemption, or broader service compromise.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A licensing link delivered while account data is unavailable can create a page carrying an empty email snapshot; user submission then reaches the activation service without the ordinary account-entry gate. Independently, custom-scheme delivery may disclose the key before the intended application receives it. Backend rejection could prevent incorrect redemption but would not authenticate custom-scheme delivery.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — External input controls the license value but not the email parameter. Empty keys are rejected, format checks gate submission, and user interaction is required. These controls constrain input and execution but do not establish account readiness, email ownership, or authenticated custom-scheme delivery.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The client sends no explicit idempotency token and receives no redemption receipt through the inspected activation interfaces. Single-use enforcement, atomic account binding, and recovery after server acceptance followed by transport failure therefore remain backend-contract uncertainties rather than verified vulnerabilities.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve the existing account-entry precondition for licensing links: await account readiness, route unauthenticated users through account verification while retaining the key, and derive the post-activation setup branch from verified account state rather than an empty code sentinel.
  • proposed — Prefer verified HTTPS delivery for license credentials. If custom-scheme fallback is necessary, consider an account-bound, short-lived exchange handle instead of the license key itself. Redact the key from route-argument stringification as defense in depth.

The hypothesis is supported. A 25-character key ending in PRO can be classified as a web key, so licenseKeyCode removes its final three characters. The deep-link flow then rejects the prefilled key because validation requires 25 characters.

Preserve the PRO suffix for valid 25-character codes.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Handle web-licensing links in _handleDeepLinkUri.

When the app receives https://lantern.io/web-licensing or lantern://web-licensing, no branch matches the URI. The router also uses its default path, so the link does not open or prefill the license screen. Add a branch for both URI shapes that extracts the key and passes the license route to _pushWithHome with replaceIfOnTop: true.
