tq v0.29.8

What's in 0.29.8

🐛 Bug fixes

  • release: quarantine RPC family (#391)

Full Changelog: reddb-io/toon@v0.29.7...v0.29.8

TOON v4.1 checkpoint

This release closes the repository's v4.1 frontier at the official TOON v4.1.1 checkpoint: revision and reference implementation revision . The TypeScript package, Rust crate, , and editor grammar share that baseline and are validated against the vendored official corpus.

API cutovers

  • TypeScript callers should use , , , , and . and are deprecated aliases for the canonical codec; old path-expanding behavior lives at .
  • Rust callers should use the suffix-free and functions and canonical model methods. Compatibility entry points are explicitly named .

Extension policy

Nested field groups and keyed tabular form are official v4.1 and are selected automatically. TOONL, primitive-array columns, object-array columns, cyclic discriminated arrays, depth guards, and truncation reports remain RedDB userland features. Wire extensions are opt-in on encode and preserve a lossless canonical fallback; they are never presented as official TOON syntax.

Migration

Replace legacy root imports and Rust legacy methods with the canonical APIs, treat dotted keys literally, remove key-folding assumptions, and review inputs that depended on lenient numeric or indentation recovery. The complete before/after guide is at https://github.com/reddb-io/toon/blob/v0.29.8/docs/migration-v4.md.

Experimental upstream frontiers

The TypeScript reviver remains an experimental opt-in audited from toon-format/toon#294; it is not part of the v4.1

Changelog

All notable changes to this project are documented in this file.

The format is based on Keep a Changelog.

Every slice that changes the tq query language adds an entry here — a new construct, a new builtin, a changed diagnostic, or a changed divergence. The tq language reference describes the surface as it stands now; this file is how it got there.

Migration: the RPC family from 0.29 to 0.31

The 0.29 RPC packages and crates were a prototype; 0.31 is the first line published against the normative spec (docs/toon-rpc-spec.md). The wire and most APIs changed:

  • Byte streams. TCP, Unix sockets and stdio carry §8.1 length-prefixed frames instead of blank-line-separated documents, so a 0.29 peer cannot talk to a 0.31 peer over them.
  • Rust clients. Client::new(transport) over ClientTransport becomes Client::duplex(transport, ClientOptions::default()) or Client::request_response(...). Calls take &self and can run concurrently, and they fail with ClientError. The transports are connect_tcp, connect_unix, reddb_io_toon_rpc_stdio::spawn, HttpTransport, WsClient and SseTransport.
  • Rust servers. TcpServer::new(addr, d).serve(), HttpService::serve() (always 0.0.0.0:8080) and WsServer::new become TcpServer::bind, HttpServer::bind and WsServer::bind, each followed by serve() or serve_with_shutdown(signal) and configured with with_limits. The SSE registry is replaced by SseServer and SseTransport, and long polling is no longer published.
  • HTTP answers a notification with 204 No Content.
  • JSON-RPC through MultiRpc. An Invalid Request carries id: null, and params: null is invalid.
  • MCP is the published Model Context Protocol (2025-06-18, JSON over stdio). The 0.29 variant (server/discover, version 2026-07-28, TOON on the wire) is gone, and hosts that speak MCP can now use the server.
  • Codegen. The .toonrpc IDL lists params as an object, so regenerate. The derive macro is removed. The CLI keeps generate and call <url>; dev is gone.
  • TypeScript servers live in @reddb-io/toon-rpc/serve, and every client and transport takes limits (spec §8.3).

Changed

  • Breaking (toon-rpc, Rust): the Rust client correlates calls by ID. Client::duplex runs one receive task over a DuplexTransport, and

Updates js-yaml from 4.3.1 to 5.4.2

Changelog

Sourced from js-yaml's changelog.

[5.4.2] - 2026-09-13

Fixed

  • forceQuotes no longer quotes non-string scalars, #798.

[5.4.1] - 2026-08-26

Changed

  • Hard-limit merge sequence size to 100.

Security

  • Count empty mappings in merge sequences toward maxTotalMergeKeys to limit CPU usage, #797.

[5.4.0] - 2026-08-25

Added

  • Added the scalarStyleRules dumper option to customize string formatting. See Scalar styling for details.

Changed

  • [breaking] Flattened the low-level AST node style representation. Scalar and collection nodes now use SCALAR_STYLE and COLLECTION_STYLE values; explicit tags use the separate tagged property. Alias nodes now contain only kind and anchor. This only affects code that directly constructs or edits AST nodes.
  • [breaking] The sortKeys option was rewritten using AST mutation to avoid side effects.
  • Reworked scalar style selection. This can change formatting without changing loaded values; in particular, whitespace-only strings are now double-quoted.

Fixed

  • Accept a byte order mark at the start of each document in a stream, #791.
  • Produce valid flow mappings with quoteFlowKeys and flowSkipColonSpace, including alias and property-only keys, #786.
  • Preserve empty scalar items when converting block sequences to flow style.
  • Do not apply the 1024-character simple-key limit to flow mapping keys.
  • Count Unicode code points, rather than UTF-16 code units, for the 1024-character simple-key limit.
  • Add an explicit document-end marker after keep-chomped block scalars when needed to preserve trailing newlines.

[5.3.0] - 2026-08-14

This release focuses on reworking the documentation and making small architectural improvements before moving forward.
