Title

[EDM-5891]: use a placeholder for new label input

Summary

The new-label input previously inserted key=value as its actual value, forcing users to clear it before entering a label. This change renders the format hint as a placeholder while keeping the input value empty.

Root Cause

LabelsField passed key=value as defaultLabel to EditableLabelControl, and the shared control copied that default into the controlled input state when editing began.

Changes

  • Added an optional placeholder prop to EditableLabelControl.
  • Changed LabelsField to pass an empty default value and key=value as placeholder text.
  • Updated the enrollment-approval Cypress page object and regression test.
  • Removed the obsolete page-object selector for the former key=value label button.

Validation

  • npm run test:typecheck — passed.
  • npx vitest run — 118 tests passed.
  • npm run lint — passed.
  • npm run build — passed with existing webpack bundle-size warnings.
  • Targeted Cypress execution is pending in CI because the local environment lacks Xvfb.

Manual Testing

In the device label workflow, click Add label and confirm the input is empty, displays key=value as a hint, and accepts a label immediately without clearing text first.

Summary

  • libs/ui-components/: EditableLabelControl now accepts an optional placeholder. The label, systemd unit, OCI tag, and other list-entry controls no longer use placeholder text as the initial value. OCI tag validation also handles an undefined tag without a runtime error.
  • libs/cypress/: Updated the enrollment-approval page object and regression test to check that the new-label field starts empty and displays key=value as its placeholder.
  • The shared UI component change can affect both standalone and OCP plugin applications. The supplied change summary reports no platform-specific app code, libs/types/, libs/i18n/, Go auth proxy, container build, packaging, or CI configuration changes.
  • The author reports that type checking, Vitest (118 tests), lint, and build passed. The build had existing webpack bundle-size warnings. Targeted Cypress execution was pending in CI because the local environment lacked Xvfb. Manual testing was not reported as completed.

Risk classification

Applied risk label: unavailable. The supplied evidence does not identify the label applied or include the labeling criteria. Therefore, the classification criteria and whether this change was close to another classification cannot be established.

Treat the label format hint as placeholder text so new label inputs start empty. Preserve existing default label behavior for other editable controls and cover the regression in the approval-flow Cypress test.

Walkthrough

The editable-label input now starts empty and displays configured placeholder text. The enrollment approval test checks the empty value and placeholder. OCI base-image tag validation now handles empty and undefined tags through validation checks.

I'm guessing the same as in EDM-5891 could be said for other places in the UI when we currently provide a defaultValue (eg. to create new base images for an OCI registry, the user needs to clear the provided "tag" value, etc).

IMO the UX should stay consistent, so if we prefer using placeholders, the change should be done similarly in all usages of EditableLabelControl. Thereore, we could drop defaultLabel and provide just an optional placeholder prop.

WDYT?

Thanks, agreed. I removed defaultLabel from EditableLabelControl and updated every call site for consistent UX: key=value, tag, and name.service are now placeholders, while the generic list controls start empty. The change is in commit f50915fa; typecheck/unit tests (118), lint, and build pass.

Thanks, it works well but there's an issue with the Repository tags.
The unique tags validation for baseImages attempts to do tag.trim(), while tag is undefined.

No need to use trim() on the tag since whitespace characters are not allowed for labels/tabs.
Please replace that line to just ìf (!tag) so that the validation doesn't break.

Fixed in 4fd91c2c. I changed the tag validation guard from !tag.trim() to !tag, so an empty placeholder-driven tag is rejected without calling trim() on undefined. I also added a regression test covering the undefined-tag case; 119 tests, lint, and build pass.

Remove the default label value from EditableLabelControl and use optional placeholders across all call sites so new entries start empty consistently.

Translate the tag placeholder.

tag is visible placeholder text with a literal word. Use t() so users see it in their selected language.

Ignore empty tag confirmations.

EditableLabelControl.tsx (Lines 14-70) calls onAddLabel on blur, even when the input is empty. Here, Line 87 pushes that value into the tags array. A user who opens Add tag and clicks away without typing creates a blank tag entry. Ignore empty values before pushing them.
