Summary of Changes

Hello @abhishekjaisw, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request significantly refactors the data ingestion pipeline for Polish statistical variables. The core change involves migrating from a static, file-based data source to a dynamic API-driven approach, ensuring that the latest and most comprehensive data from the Polish statistical office can be regularly imported. The updated script now fetches data programmatically, processes it, and organizes it into yearly CSV files, enhancing the robustness and maintainability of the data pipeline.

Highlights

  • Data Source Transition: The data ingestion process for Polish statistics has been updated from processing a static Excel file to dynamically fetching data directly from the Polish statistical office's API.
  • New Data Download Script: The download_input_data.py script has been completely rewritten to interact with the API, load a GCS template, match variables, download historical data, and generate yearly input CSVs.
  • Output File Structure Change: Instead of a single input CSV, the script now generates multiple yearly CSV files (e.g., StatisticsPoland_input_YYYY.csv) stored in a new source_files directory.
  • Metadata File Renamed: The Statistics_Poland_metadata.csv file has been renamed to StatisticsPoland_metadata.csv for consistency.
  • Configuration Updates: The README.md and manifest.json files have been updated to reflect the new data source, output file patterns, and the renamed metadata file.
Changelog
  • statvar_imports/statistics_poland/README.md
    • Updated instructions for downloading input data to reflect the new API-driven process and the generation of multiple yearly CSVs in a 'source_files' directory.
    • Modified the example command for the main data run of stat_var_processor.py to use the new wildcard input pattern (source_files/*.csv) and the renamed metadata file.
  • statvar_imports/statistics_poland/StatisticsPoland_output_stat_vars.mcf
    • Removed this auto-generated statistical variable definition file.
  • statvar_imports/statistics_poland/Statistics_Poland_metadata.csv
    • File renamed to StatisticsPoland_metadata.csv.
  • statvar_imports/statistics_poland/download_input_data.py
    • Completely rewritten to utilize the Polish statistical office's API for data retrieval, replacing the previous Excel-based processing.
    • Introduced new functions for loading GCS templates, fetching API variables, and matching data based on age, sex, and location stems.
    • Implemented logic to download data for multiple years, calculate 'total' age values, and output data into separate yearly CSV files within a 'source_files' directory.
    • Replaced gsutil subprocess calls with google.cloud.storage client for GCS interaction and requests for API calls.
  • statvar_imports/statistics_poland/manifest.json
    • Updated the scripts entry to reflect the new input data pattern (source_files/*.csv) and the renamed metadata file for stat_var_processor.py.
    • Modified the source_files entry to point to the new wildcard pattern for the yearly input CSVs (source_files/*.csv).
  • statvar_imports/statistics_poland/test/StatisticsPoland_output_stat_vars.mcf
    • The auto-generated header comment was updated with a new timestamp, reflecting a regeneration of the file due to upstream changes (e.g., metadata filename).

Code Review

This pull request is a great improvement, updating the Poland statistics import to use a live API instead of a static file. This makes the data import process much more dynamic and up-to-date. The changes to the download script are substantial and well-structured. My review includes a couple of medium-severity recommendations to improve the script's robustness and maintainability, particularly around API pagination and data matching logic.
