Making more patterns available to the user #128

Description

@MaggieCabrera

Ipsum is simple by design to be out of the way of the user. This simplicity comes at a cost, since it requires the user to build everything themselves if the default templates are not enough for their needs. Previous default themes include a wide library of patterns that help with this. I have three suggestions, we can pick and chose, combine or do all three:

  • Add a few more patterns specific to Ipsum to help users new to the editor achieve the layouts they need
  • Include a curated set of patterns from the pattern library that could fit the theme
  • Work on landing a solution in Gutenberg that allows the user to see the patterns from all the themes they have in their WordPress installation. This would include the patterns from TT4 and TT5 by default, which are a solid set and cover many cases. I have searched and have found no open GB issue for this.

    Thanks for making this an issue, as we discussed, @MaggieCabrera. Would you prefer that I redesign the patterns on TT4 and TT5 instead of the solution you mentioned in bullet three? I am not familiar with the full scope, but I believe I can complete that within 7-10 days. Thoughts?

    I think option 3 would be very unlikely to make it in time for the release of Ipsum, so I would rather if the theme had their own patterns personally. I still will try to explore and prototype a more holistic solution in case new default themes follow the lead of this one, so we can both wok in parallel with the different solutions. Thank you!

    @MaggieCabrera, I’ve mapped TT4 and TT5’s pattern libraries against what we already cover: deduplicating the concepts the two themes share and dropping what our archive pack covers, I land on about 28 patterns to design, in families:

    • Blog home

    Extras

    • Membership / subscriber-only section

    Hey @MaggieCabrera! The pattern expansion we discussed is ready for you to review. It comes in three parts:

    #134 Patterns 1: six patterns (the statements, FAQs, alternating text, coming soon, and the blog home page).
    #139 Patterns 2: the other twenty — footers, galleries, post formats, CTAs, pages, events, and a second navigation overlay. It’s stacked on 134 so the diff stays reviewable; it rebases onto trunk the moment part 1 merges.

    #138 Content width: one line, 600px → 640px. Designing with outer and inner blocks showed the old measure was too tight once a card carries its own padding.

    For option 3 I opened WordPress/gutenberg#84507 so feel free to pitch in on that experience
