Fix Office preview for handlers registered in the 32-bit registry view only - #2051
Office documents associated with WPS Office could not be previewed even though a preview handler was installed. WPS Office is a 32-bit application and registers its preview handlers ("WPS文字 预览器", "WPS表格 预览器", "WPS演示 预览器") only in the 32-bit registry view (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WOW6432Node\CLSID). QuickLook is a 64-bit process, so:
CLSIDRegister.GetName() returns null because HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{guid} does not exist in the 64-bit view. CanHandle() then reports the file as unsupported and pressing Space does nothing at all.
Even if that check passed, the handler could not be activated (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG), because the class is not registered in the 64-bit view either.
This PR adds PreviewHandlerRegistration:
It checks whether the handler CLSID is available in the registry view of the current process.
If it is not, but the CLSID is registered in the 32-bit view with a display name and a LocalServer32 command line, the registration is mirrored into the 64-bit view for the current user only (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID).
No elevation is required, the machine-wide registration written by the Office suite is untouched, and the change is fully reversible by deleting the mirrored keys.
A new FixPreviewHandlerRegistration setting (default True, documented in OPTIONS.md) allows users to opt out.
Tested on Windows 11 (zh-CN) with WPS Office 12.1.0.29161 and the plugin built from this branch (net462, Release|AnyCPU):
File
Before
After
.docx
no preview window
preview window opens, WPS 文字 renders the document
.xlsx
no preview window
preview window opens, WPS 表格 renders the document
.pptx
no preview window
preview window opens, WPS 演示 renders the document
Verification method: after pressing Space, the QuickLook preview window is enumerated and the rendered document window (owned by wps.exe / et.exe / wpp.exe and attached to the QuickLook preview window) contains the previewed file name. The mirrored HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID keys are created automatically on the first preview, and with FixPreviewHandlerRegistration set to False neither the keys nor the preview window appear, confirming the behavior is opt-out. Machine-wide Microsoft Office registrations are unaffected because the lookup short-circuits when the handler is already present in the 64-bit view.
Screenshots or a short screen recording of the three formats can be provided on request.
Testing
Automated tests live in tests/QuickLook.Tests and run on every PR via .github/workflows/tests.yml:
dotnet test tests/QuickLook.Tests/QuickLook.Tests.csproj -c Release
Result on Windows 11 x64 with the .NET 8 SDK: 15/15 passing.
The tests use the real registry: the 32-bit source registration is written to HKCU\Software\Classes\WOW6432Node\CLSID\{guid}, which is the key the 32-bit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT view maps to. Every test uses its own CLSID and deletes everything it created. Covered: mirror creation from a LocalServer32 registration, named and non-string LocalServer32 values, untouched registrations QuickLook did not create, refresh of stale mirrors, idempotency, 32-bit in-process-only handlers, incomplete sources, and the display name plus activation requirement.
The tests found and fixed three issues (commit ddb8198): a non-string LocalServer32 value made the mirror fail entirely; CheckPreviewHandler=False skipped mirroring and left WPS documents blank; a source without a display name could leave a partial key.
Commit 5c9c429 hardens the remaining review findings: a stale mirror is removed only after the 32-bit key is confirmed absent (read errors count as unknown), a LocalServer32 key needs a non-blank default command or ServerExecutable to be mirrored, a refresh marks the mirror incomplete first, and registry keys opened for inspection are disposed.
Commit fd5a45f completes the lifecycle handling: a mirror is removed when the 32-bit source no longer registers an out-of-process server (but kept when LocalServer32 exists and cannot be read), and a newly created mirror key is marked as QuickLook-owned before its child values are written.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
OfficeViewer can make eligible 32-bit out-of-process preview handlers available to the 64-bit app. The FixPreviewHandlerRegistration option is enabled by default and can be turned off.
Registration is per-user and requires no administrator access. Mirrored values refresh when the source registration changes, and removing the mirror reverts the change.
32-bit in-process-only handlers are not mirrored. Existing 64-bit registrations are preserved, and incomplete or unsupported registrations are not treated as available.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
OfficeViewer can optionally mirror qualifying 32-bit preview-handler registrations into the current user’s 64-bit registry view. The change adds registration checks, registry-backed tests, a Windows test project, and a GitHub Actions workflow.

Summary
Registry checks and mirroring QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.OfficeViewer/PreviewHandlerRegistration.cs
The helper reads registration values, checks whether a registration is complete, and creates or refreshes marked mirrors. It preserves unmarked 64-bit registrations and removes a mirror only after confirming the 32-bit source is absent or no longer has a readable out-of-process activation.
OfficeViewer handling and option QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.OfficeViewer/Plugin.cs, OPTIONS.md
CanHandle optionally attempts to ensure current-view registration before applying CheckPreviewHandler. The documentation describes the default-enabled option and its mirroring behavior.
Registration tests and workflow tests/QuickLook.Tests/QuickLook.Tests.csproj, tests/QuickLook.Tests/PreviewHandlerRegistrationTests.cs, .github/workflows/tests.yml
The Windows test project covers mirroring, registration checks, refresh, and preservation of unmarked registrations. The workflow runs the tests on pushes and pull requests targeting master, and on manual dispatch.

Preserve an existing 64-bit activation registration.
IsRegisteredForCurrentView treats a CLSID with LocalServer32 but no display name as unregistered. If an eligible 32-bit registration also exists, EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView can then overwrite the current-user 64-bit server values. Check the required 64-bit activation registration before writing, and do not overwrite an existing registration.

Publish the registration marker after the child keys are complete.
IsRegisteredForCurrentView checks only the CLSID default value. If a child-key write fails or the process stops after line 93, later calls can accept the incomplete mirror and skip repair. The failure window is narrow, so this is a minor availability issue rather than a major data-integrity issue.
Move the default-value write after both child keys. In the catch path, remove only keys created by this attempt.

Preserve LocalServer32\ServerExecutable when it exists.
COM can use ServerExecutable to identify the executable when the default command line contains an ambiguous path. Copying only the default value removes that protection from the mirrored registration. COM can then launch the wrong executable or fail to launch the handler. Copy this named value with the command line when it exists. (learn.microsoft.com)

Thanks for the review. I addressed the findings in d4f9232:
Refresh mirror when the source changes (Major) — Keys created by QuickLook now carry a QuickLookMirror marker value. EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView refreshes a QuickLook-created mirror when the 32-bit source registration diverges, and CanHandle now runs the ensure step before the plain "already registered" check so reconciliation actually happens. Verified by pointing a mirrored LocalServer32 at a non-existent path and previewing another document: the mirror was rewritten to the current path and the preview rendered.
In-process / surrogate registrations (Major) — Not implemented: copying a 32-bit InprocServer32 into the 64-bit view would make a 64-bit process load a 32-bit DLL. The helper now skips such registrations explicitly (with a debug trace), and the class remarks plus OPTIONS.md state that the feature supports out-of-process (LocalServer32) handlers only. WPS Office uses LocalServer32, so this case is unaffected.
LocalServer32\ServerExecutable (Minor) — The whole LocalServer32 value set is now copied, including named values, instead of only the default command line. Verified with a synthetic 32-bit registration that contains ServerExecutable.
Preserve an existing 64-bit registration (Minor) — IsRegisteredForCurrentView now requires a display name plus an activation (LocalServer32 or InprocServer32; required because valid in-process handlers have no LocalServer32). EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView never overwrites a registration that is not marked as a QuickLook mirror. Verified with a synthetic complete 64-bit registration: its values were left untouched.
Publish the marker last / roll back partial writes (Minor) — The child keys are written first; the mirror marker and display name are written last. On failure only keys created by the current attempt are removed.
Also added XML documentation to the helper methods. Re-tested on Windows 11 with WPS Office 12.1.0.29161: .docx/.xlsx/.pptx previews render, stale-mirror refresh works, and FixPreviewHandlerRegistration=False still disables the behavior (no keys written, no preview).
Run the registration fix before the CheckPreviewHandler early return.
When CheckPreviewHandler is False, CanHandle returns true before FixPreviewHandlerRegistration is read. For a file whose handler is registered only in the 32-bit view, no 64-bit mirror is created. The host then fails to activate the handler and the preview panel stays blank. FixPreviewHandlerRegistration is documented as mirroring when True, with no dependency on CheckPreviewHandler.
Possible direction
Read FixPreviewHandlerRegistration and call PreviewHandlerRegistration.EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView before the !checkPreviewHandler return. Keep the return true for the disabled-check path. This adds a registry write on that path, so confirm it is intended.

Update CanHandle so FixPreviewHandlerRegistration is evaluated and
PreviewHandlerRegistration.EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView runs before the
!checkPreviewHandler early return, while preserving return true when checking is
disabled. Confirm the setting’s documented behavior intends this registry update
on that path.
- CanHandle now mirrors 32-bit handlers even when CheckPreviewHandler is
disabled. That setting skips the availability check; it does not opt out
of making an otherwise unusable handler work.
- Skip non-string LocalServer32 values instead of storing null. A single
REG_DWORD value made WriteMirror throw and left no mirror at all.
- Refuse to write a mirror when the 32-bit source has no display name.
tests/QuickLook.Tests covers the 32-bit preview handler mirroring logic:
creation, named LocalServer32 values, non-string values, untouched
non-mirror registrations, refresh of stale mirrors, idempotency,
in-process only handlers, incomplete sources, and the display name plus
activation requirement.
The plugin targets .NET Framework 4.6.2, which a modern test project
cannot reference, so the single source file under test is compiled into
the test assembly. The tests use a unique CLSID per test and only touch
HKCU, deleting everything they create.
A tests workflow runs the suite on pull requests.
@emako Here is the testing information you asked for, plus an automated test suite and the follow-up fixes.
Automated tests (new, tests/QuickLook.Tests, wired up in .github/workflows/tests.yml):
dotnet test tests/QuickLook.Tests/QuickLook.Tests.csproj -c Release
Result on Windows 11 x64 with the .NET 8 SDK: 13/13 passing.
The tests exercise PreviewHandlerRegistration against the real registry. The 32-bit source registration is written to HKCU\Software\Classes\WOW6432Node\CLSID\{guid}, which is the key the 32-bit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT view maps to, so the production code path is used unchanged (no mocks). Each test uses its own CLSID and deletes everything it created.
Coverage:
mirror creation from a 32-bit LocalServer32 registration;
named LocalServer32 values (ServerExecutable), including a registration that has ServerExecutable but no default command;
non-string values under LocalServer32;
a LocalServer32 key without a usable command is rejected instead of mirrored;
a 64-bit registration QuickLook did not create is left untouched;
refresh when the 32-bit source changes;
stale mirror removal once the 32-bit source is really gone;
idempotency;
32-bit InprocServer32-only handlers are skipped;
incomplete source (no display name);
IsRegisteredForCurrentView requires display name plus activation.
Bugs the tests found, fixed in ddb8198:
A non-string value under LocalServer32 (for example a REG_DWORD) was stored as null and made WriteMirror throw on SetValue, so no mirror was created at all. Non-string values are now skipped. This is CodeRabbit's first finding.
CheckPreviewHandler=False returned from CanHandle before the mirroring step, so WPS files stayed blank for users who disabled the check. The mirroring step now runs first, which is CodeRabbit's follow-up finding.
A 32-bit source without a display name is rejected before any partial key is written.
Additional hardening in 5c9c429 (from the remaining review threads): a stale mirror is removed only after the 32-bit key is confirmed absent (read errors are treated as unknown); a LocalServer32 key counts as an out-of-process registration only when it has a non-blank command or ServerExecutable; a refresh marks the mirror incomplete first; registry keys opened for inspection are disposed.
Manual verification already reported above (unchanged): Windows 11 zh-CN, WPS Office 12.1.0.29161; .docx / .xlsx / .pptx preview with WPS 文字 / 表格 / 演示; FixPreviewHandlerRegistration=False writes no keys and shows no preview.
What is not automated: an end-to-end test that installs WPS and renders a document. That needs a Windows VM with WPS and UI automation; I left it out because I did not want a proprietary Office suite in the required CI path. If that is the part you want, I can add it.
Could you tell me what you would accept as "proper testing"? I can provide any of these:
a screen recording of the three formats with the freshly built plugin;
a script that dumps HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID before/after and verifies the created keys;
the unit tests above, which are already in this PR and run on every PR.
- Remove a QuickLook-created mirror only after confirming that the 32-bit
source key is really gone, so an uninstalled Office suite does not leave
a stale mirror behind. Read errors are treated as unknown, not absent.
- Treat a LocalServer32 key as registrable only when it has a non-blank
default command or a non-blank ServerExecutable value.
- Mark a mirror incomplete before refreshing it, and dispose the key used
to detect an existing mirror.
- Add tests for the three new behaviors (13 passing).

Mark a new mirror key as owned before its child values are written.
If the process stops after line 247 creates the key and before line 274 writes QuickLookMirror, the key keeps its child values and has no marker and no default value. Later attempts treat it as a user-owned registration. EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView returns IsComplete, which is false, and does not repair the key. Nothing else in this file removes it. Disabling FixPreviewHandlerRegistration only stops the ensure call. It does not remove the key.
The comment at lines 276-277 assumes an interrupted write is repaired on the next attempt. That holds only after the marker is written. Write the marker for a newly created key right after the null check. Existing keys are unchanged, because createdNew is false for them. The display name remains the last write.

Add a test for a 32-bit registration whose LocalServer32 subkey cannot be read.
The stale-mirror test deletes the whole 32-bit CLSID key, so the source is absent. A change that removes the mirror whenever the source read returns null would still pass the suite. The current code keeps the mirror when the CLSID key exists and LocalServer32 cannot be read. No test covers that path.
Add a test that:
Creates the 32-bit registration with a LocalServer32 command and asserts that EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView returns true.
Makes only the LocalServer32 subkey unreadable while the CLSID key remains. A deny-read access rule on that subkey can do this. Save the subkey's original security settings before the change.
Restores the saved settings in a finally block before the test ends. DeleteKey in Dispose swallows exceptions, so a missed restore leaves keys behind without a failing test.
Calls EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView again while the subkey is unreadable. Asserts that it returns false and that the mirror still exists.

- Remove a QuickLook mirror when the 32-bit source no longer registers an
out-of-process server, but keep it when LocalServer32 exists and cannot
be read (ACL, damaged hive): a failed read must not delete a mirror that
still works.
- Write the QuickLookMirror marker as soon as a new mirror key is created,
so an interrupted first write is repaired on the next attempt instead of
being mistaken for a user-owned registration.
- Tests: mirror removal when the source stops being a local server, and
mirror retention when LocalServer32 is unreadable (deny-read ACL).
15 tests, all passing.
All three items from this review are handled in fd5a45f.
1. Remove the mirror when the 32-bit source has no local server (inline comment) — done. While implementing it I hit exactly the case the test nitpick described: reading LocalServer32 can fail (deny-read ACL, damaged hive) and look like "no local server". The mirror is therefore removed only when the subkey could actually be read; a failed read keeps the mirror and the next readable call decides. New tests cover both paths.
2. Mark a new mirror key as owned before its child values are written — done. QuickLookMirror is written immediately after CreateSubKey when the key was created by this attempt, so an interrupted first write is repaired on the next attempt. Existing keys are untouched and the display name is still the last write.
3. Test for a LocalServer32 that cannot be read — done. The test creates the registration, applies a deny-read ACE to LocalServer32 only, asserts that the subkey is really unreadable, then asserts that EnsureRegisteredForCurrentView returns false and that the mirror still exists. The ACE is removed in a finally block.
That last test turned out to be worth writing for a second reason: restoring the originally captured security descriptor does not remove the deny ACE (the descriptor is auto-inherited), so the first version silently left locked keys behind. The test now removes the rule explicitly, and I cleaned up the keys leaked by earlier versions of it during local development. A passing run leaves nothing behind.
Verification: dotnet test tests/QuickLook.Tests/QuickLook.Tests.csproj -c Release → 15/15 passing on Windows 11 x64, and the OfficeViewer plugin still builds for net462 (Release|AnyCPU).

Brief Description of Changes
Office documents associated with WPS Office could not be previewed even though a preview handler was installed. WPS Office is a 32-bit application and registers its preview handlers ("WPS文字 预览器", "WPS表格 预览器", "WPS演示 预览器") only in the 32-bit registry view (
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WOW6432Node\CLSID). QuickLook is a 64-bit process, so:CLSIDRegister.GetName()returnsnullbecauseHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{guid}does not exist in the 64-bit view.CanHandle()then reports the file as unsupported and pressing Space does nothing at all.REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG), because the class is not registered in the 64-bit view either.This PR adds
PreviewHandlerRegistration:LocalServer32command line, the registration is mirrored into the 64-bit view for the current user only (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID).FixPreviewHandlerRegistrationsetting (defaultTrue, documented inOPTIONS.md) allows users to opt out.Related Issue (if any)
Fixes #2025
Additional Notes
Tested on Windows 11 (zh-CN) with WPS Office 12.1.0.29161 and the plugin built from this branch (
net462,Release|AnyCPU):.docx.xlsx.pptxVerification method: after pressing Space, the QuickLook preview window is enumerated and the rendered document window (owned by
wps.exe/et.exe/wpp.exeand attached to the QuickLook preview window) contains the previewed file name. The mirroredHKCU\Software\Classes\CLSIDkeys are created automatically on the first preview, and withFixPreviewHandlerRegistrationset toFalseneither the keys nor the preview window appear, confirming the behavior is opt-out. Machine-wide Microsoft Office registrations are unaffected because the lookup short-circuits when the handler is already present in the 64-bit view.Screenshots or a short screen recording of the three formats can be provided on request.
Testing
Automated tests live in
tests/QuickLook.Testsand run on every PR via.github/workflows/tests.yml:Result on Windows 11 x64 with the .NET 8 SDK: 15/15 passing.
The tests use the real registry: the 32-bit source registration is written to
HKCU\Software\Classes\WOW6432Node\CLSID\{guid}, which is the key the 32-bitHKEY_CLASSES_ROOTview maps to. Every test uses its own CLSID and deletes everything it created. Covered: mirror creation from aLocalServer32registration, named and non-stringLocalServer32values, untouched registrations QuickLook did not create, refresh of stale mirrors, idempotency, 32-bit in-process-only handlers, incomplete sources, and the display name plus activation requirement.The tests found and fixed three issues (commit
ddb8198): a non-stringLocalServer32value made the mirror fail entirely;CheckPreviewHandler=Falseskipped mirroring and left WPS documents blank; a source without a display name could leave a partial key.Commit
5c9c429hardens the remaining review findings: a stale mirror is removed only after the 32-bit key is confirmed absent (read errors count as unknown), aLocalServer32key needs a non-blank default command orServerExecutableto be mirrored, a refresh marks the mirror incomplete first, and registry keys opened for inspection are disposed.Commit
fd5a45fcompletes the lifecycle handling: a mirror is removed when the 32-bit source no longer registers an out-of-process server (but kept whenLocalServer32exists and cannot be read), and a newly created mirror key is marked as QuickLook-owned before its child values are written.Summary by CodeRabbit
