Part of the code-first rebuild of the email send stack; replaces parts of #118924 (the read-only view of code-managed templates).

Problem

A PostHog user who opens a template that a repository manages sees the full editor. Their edits are refused with 403 immutable, and the page doesn't say why or where the template lives.
They need to see that code manages it, where its file is, who it sends as, and how to take it back into PostHog.

Impact

Pays into Grow Workflows by keeping code-managed templates usable for the whole team, which keeps code sends going. In scope: Workflows, the email template library.

The read-only view shows only for templates the server returns with managed_by: code, which only a flag-gated upload creates.
The API example on the template page switches to send/email/ only with workflows-email-from-code on.
Not behind the flag: GitMetadataParser and the library card frame change for everyone. That covers error-tracking release and stack-frame links (Releases.tsx, ReleasesPopoverContent.tsx, framesCodeSourceLogic.ts) and every card preview.

A template managed by code opens read-only. It shows a "Managed by code" tag, its key with copy, and a link to its file at the uploaded ref.
The preview shows the From and Reply-to the template sends with, in a read-only row.
The menu offers Duplicate and "Stop managing in code", which asks first and names the file. Delete is disabled.
Duplicate drops the empty design of an uploaded template, so the copy saves. The create API refuses design: null with 400.
Edits the server refuses stay in a banner with "Duplicate with my changes", so nothing typed is lost. The banner has no close button: it leaves through Duplicate with my changes, Stop managing in code, or a confirmed navigation. Leaving the page asks first. The banner is the only notice: the app-wide "Save template failed" toast skips this refusal (initKea.ts), and every other save failure still toasts.
A failed "Stop managing in code" shows one toast with the reason, such as "You need editor access to this template's transactional email workflow."
A refused publish is not reported to error tracking, because the banner handles it.
The library marks code-managed templates with the same tag.
The quill view behind today-rail-nav gets the same actions.
The git link parser reads a file and ref on any known git host, which the source link needs.
The From row says when the sender could not load, in place of a skeleton that never ends.
A ref is shortened and linked as a commit only when it is a full 40 or 64 character hash.
Outside the template view: GitMetadataParser changes for every caller, error tracking included:
- Bitbucket commit links use /commits/ and branch links use /src/.
- GitLab HTTPS remotes in subgroups resolve to the group and the subgroup path.
- Remotes without a scheme, such as github.com/org/repo, now parse and get links.
- Branch names are URL-encoded.
Every library card's preview renders through EmailHtmlFrame. The HTML is parsed and serialized again, so comments outside <html> drop, and links open in a new tab.

Mechanical: the sender display moves from EmailSenderSummary into EmailSenderDetails, shared by the editor and the read-only row.

Storybook at 1440px and 520px, mocked data, at 4117342. Later commits change only what Duplicate sends, shown in the running-app walk below. The other views are pixel-identical to the earlier walk at b7e93f2. After a release, the view is the normal editor with no unsaved-draft marker. The short ref abc1234 links to /tree/abc1234, and a full hash links to /commit/. All captures are saved with fleet proof.

How did you test this code?

Test seams: messageTemplateLogic through expectLogic, and rendered tests of the menu, the HTML frame and the read-only preview.

Test rationale:

messageTemplateLogic.test.ts: an upload that claims the template back while edits wait, and refused edits lost on release or discard.
MessageTemplateMenu.test.tsx: release, Cancel and Duplicate paths of the menu.
ReadOnlyTemplatePreview.test.tsx: the template's own sender fields losing to the sender's defaults, no message when there is no sender, and a failed integrations request that left the From row loading.
messageTemplateLogic.test.ts: a refused publish that shows the generic "Save template failed" toast next to the banner, and another 403 on save that no longer toasts.
messageTemplateLogic.test.ts: a Duplicate of an uploaded template that sent design: null; the create mocks now refuse it as the serializer does.
messageTemplateLogic.test.ts: tells the person once when the release fails, a failed release that showed two toasts.
messageTemplateLogic.test.ts: the refused-publish rows, a refused publish reported to error tracking.
messageTemplateLogic.test.ts: a release whose content an upload changed, which showed a false unsaved draft, and a hex-looking tag shown as a short commit.

Proofs on this head d9bdbd8 (saved with fleet proof):

UI walk and live run on a production build of this head, signed in on the seeded demo project, the flag on. An upload by key from code, the code-managed view, the menu, the release dialog, a release, an edit, a second upload that takes the template back, a refused Publish, and a refused release. The API saw only the two intended 403s.
The refused release is simulated: the walk answers the release PATCH with 403 permission_denied in the browser, because the seeded user is an admin.

Prod shape: a gap, accepted by the standing rule until read-only production access exists on 2026-11-02.
Lane gate on this head: ruff, the IDOR check, the migration checks, repo-wide mypy, and the messaging and workflows tests pass, and so do the frontend typecheck, lint, format check and the changed jest tests.

Running app at 7b2198c, a production build on a seeded demo project with real uploads: library tag, read-only view, menu, Duplicate of an uploaded template, release, a re-upload that takes the template back, and the API tab with the flag on and off. 12 captures saved with fleet proof, no failed API calls.

Signed-in walk in the running app at d321dd8, with a production frontend build and real uploads from GitHub and GitLab sources, in both the LemonUI view and the today-rail-nav quill view (saved with fleet proof). All 15 steps match the Storybook captures, the narrow 547px scene included.
Refused edit, step 9 again at 2332fd3: an upload took the template back while it was being edited, and Publish was refused (403). Only the warning banner and "Duplicate with my changes" show. No toast fired: a watcher on the toast container recorded nothing. The walk before this fix showed a second, generic "Save template failed" toast.
The "…" button on a library card overlaps the first line of its preview. Master shows the same overlap, so it is not from this PR (master left, this PR right).

Release status

This change is behind a feature flag and is not available to users
The read-only view appears only for templates a flag-gated upload made. The git link parser and the card preview frame change for everyone.

The global loader toast also showed the server message, so the user saw two errors. messageTemplateLogic now owns the `immutable` refusal of saveTemplate. P2 · Flush pending canvas edits before capturing refused changes

When an autosave returns immutable during designUpdated's 500 ms debounce, values.template lacks the latest canvas edit. claimedByUpload captures this stale value, then switches to read-only and unmounts EmailTemplater, clearing its editor ref before the pending export. “Duplicate with my changes” loses that edit; flush the canvas before capturing changes and switching views.
