AI-assisted change proposal. Filed by agent driven by @soloturn via GDD.

Fixes #5281 (installing into C:\Program Files\terasology and running without elevation crashes with AccessDeniedException trying to create .local next to the install - the game shouldn't be writing user data next to its own binaries in the first place).

Resolves the OS-standard folder for each kind of data directly - no third-party library. On Linux that means:

Folder XDG variable
saves, recordings, screenshots, modules, sandbox XDG_DATA_HOME
logs XDG_STATE_HOME
module cache XDG_CACHE_HOME
configs XDG_CONFIG_HOME

macOS has no env vars, just fixed folders under ~/Library:

Folder macOS location
saves, recordings, screenshots, modules, sandbox, logs, configs ~/Library/Application Support/<project> (there's no separate macOS config location, so config nests under the same folder as everything else)
module cache ~/Library/Caches/<project>

Windows has no env vars either, just Known Folder IDs, resolved via JNA's Shell32Util.getKnownFolderPath (the same Win32 call BenjaminAmos's review pointed at - not a PowerShell shell-out):

Folder Windows location
saves, recordings, screenshots, modules, sandbox FOLDERID_RoamingAppData\terasology\terasology\data
logs FOLDERID_LocalAppData\terasology\terasology\data
module cache FOLDERID_LocalAppData\terasology\terasology\cache
configs FOLDERID_RoamingAppData\terasology\terasology\config

--homedir=<path> (used by TerasologyLauncher, and by tests via useOverrideHomePath) overrides all of that: every folder below then nests under <path> instead, so the whole tree is self-contained and relocatable. With no --homedir, each folder gets its own real OS-standard location.

Migration (Copilot review)

Without --homedir, switching the default root would otherwise make upgrading users' saves, modules, and settings look like they vanished - they're just sitting in the old default location now. useDefaultHomePath() now migrates: moves the old default root (unchanged on Linux; ~/Library/Application Support/Terasology on macOS; SavedGames-or-Documents\Terasology on Windows) into the new one, then separately carries its nested configs/logs/cachedModules on to their own new split locations too, since those move even where the data root itself didn't (e.g. Linux). One-time per machine: each move only runs while its target doesn't exist yet, so it's a no-op on every launch after the first.

Where each directory ends up

Folder Launcher / tests Linux macOS Windows
--homedir flag no flag no flag no flag
saves <homedir>/saves ~/.local/share/terasology/saves ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology/saves %APPDATA%\terasology\terasology\data\saves
recordings <homedir>/recordings ~/.local/share/terasology/recordings ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology/recordings %APPDATA%\terasology\terasology\data\recordings
logs <homedir>/logs ~/.local/state/terasology/logs ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology/logs %LOCALAPPDATA%\terasology\terasology\data\logs
shader logs <homedir>/logs/shaders ~/.local/state/terasology/logs/shaders ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology/logs/shaders %LOCALAPPDATA%\terasology\terasology\data\logs\shaders
modules <homedir>/modules ~/.local/share/terasology/modules ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology/modules %APPDATA%\terasology\terasology\data\modules
module cache <homedir>/cachedModules ~/.cache/terasology/cachedModules ~/Library/Caches/org.terasology.terasology/cachedModules %LOCALAPPDATA%\terasology\terasology\cache\cachedModules
screenshots <homedir>/screenshots ~/.local/share/terasology/screenshots ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology/screenshots %APPDATA%\terasology\terasology\data\screenshots
configs <homedir>/configs ~/.config/terasology/configs ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology/configs %APPDATA%\terasology\terasology\config\configs
sandbox <homedir>/sandbox ~/.local/share/terasology/sandbox ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology/sandbox %APPDATA%\terasology\terasology\data\sandbox

<homedir> = the folder passed to --homedir / useOverrideHomePath. Different per install, no fixed value. macOS configs land next to saves (not under Library/Preferences) because macOS has no separate config location - it's the same folder as data.

(An earlier revision of this table showed an extra org\ segment in the Windows paths - that was never actually correct, just uncaught since it was never spot-checked on real Windows. The paths above are terasology\terasology, two levels, matching what's actually on disk.)

Test plan

  • PathManagerTest (15/15 in unitTest, 2/2 in filesystemSideEffectTest) - all pass, including new coverage for the migration move logic.
  • Full engine-tests:unitTest suite - no new failures.
  • checkstyleMain passes on PathManager.java.
  • On-disk spot check on macOS: cachedModules lands under ~/Library/Caches/org.terasology.terasology, separate from saves/logs/configs/etc. under ~/Library/Application Support/org.terasology.terasology, when no --homedir is set.

It looks like the directories-jvm library uses a Powershell script to try and identify special folders on Windows, which may fail in restricted environments (see also the pinned issue https://github.com/dirs-dev/directories-jvm/issues/49). In general the library would probably work well for macOS and Linux but I have reservations about it continuing to work under Windows. Our current approach using JNA to call the supported Win32 API is much more robust.

This may still be the better approach overall but I need to be sure that it will not make things worse for Windows users.

At a cursory glance, these changes appear to break several existing workflows, especially those using a different home directory.

i share your concern, and put a comment on dirs-dev/directories-jvm#61, am thinking that one could make a pull request towards that library even ... and, i left a rant at microsofts openjdk, which i am less fond of: microsoft/openjdk#628.

Addresses BenjaminAmos's review of ff59f29 on #5284:

- Terasology.handleLaunchArguments() had stopped honoring --homedir and
always called useDefaultHomePath() instead - restored the override path,
needed for testing multiple clients against separate home directories.

- PathManager's constructor default changed from installPath to the new
PROJECT_PATH. useDefaultHomePath() (the actual fix for #5281 - it now
resolves through dev.dirs on every OS, not just a fragile Windows-only
Shell32Util/JFileChooser lookup) always overwrites this before a normal
launch reads it, so the change was inert there - but findInstallPath()
already has its own fallback (the current directory) for when
native-library detection fails, e.g. a dev workspace, and an
unconfigured PathManager should keep behaving the way it always has
rather than silently switching to the OS home directory underneath
something that isn't expecting it to. Reverted to installPath.

Also rewrote PathManagerTest's per-OS default-home-path tests: they
redirected the `user.home` system property to a @tempdir, which is how
the replaced hand-rolled logic looked up the home directory - dev.dirs
asks the OS directly on every platform (not through that property, per
the Mac case actually failing under the new code), so unlike before that
redirection no longer sandboxes any of them, not just Windows. One
cross-platform test replaces the three, tagged filesystem-side-effects
like the old Windows-only one already was, for the same now-universal
reason.

The change relocates user data to OS-standard directories, but a Windows directory lookup failure can prevent the application from starting, and getHomeModPath() can still select installation or cached modules instead of the configured user modules. A relative Linux state-directory setting can also place logs under the working directory, so these issues should be fixed before merging.

Agent-authored comment — @soloturn via GDD.

Consolidating how @BenjaminAmos's review is addressed, so this doesn't stay spread across a dozen replies:

The PowerShell concern (top-level review note) is now fully resolved, not just discussed. dev.dirs is gone entirely - no more third-party library, no PowerShell shell-out on Windows. The four OS-standard locations are now resolved directly: JNA's Shell32Util.getKnownFolderPath on Windows (the same Win32 call the engine's other platform code already used, and what BenjaminAmos's review pointed at as the more robust approach), $XDG_* env vars on Linux, fixed ~/Library/... paths on macOS. dev.dirs' own fix for this (dirs-dev/directories-jvm#61) was never released to Maven Central and needs Java 22 anyway - not usable here regardless.

The core concern ("breaks workflows using a different home directory") was real. LOG_DIR/SHADER_LOG_DIR/MODULE_CACHE_DIR had become absolute OS-standard paths, so --homedir (TerasologyLauncher's mechanism for pointing at a custom home - portable installs, multi-client testing) silently stopped controlling where logs, shader logs, and the module cache land - every launcher-managed install was affected, not just direct runs. Fixed: those three are plain relative names again, resolved against homePath in updateDirs()/defaultModPaths() exactly like before this PR. Regression test overrideHomePathIsRespectedByLogAndModuleCachePaths covers it. The only thing that actually changed is the default home when nothing sets --homedir at all (no launcher) - launcher-driven runs are unaffected.

Inline suggestions, one by one:

  • Naming (PROJ_DIRS→PROJECT_DIRS, PROJ_PATH→PROJECT_PATH, checkstyle) - adopted as suggested (now PROJECT_DATA_DIR and friends, since dev.dirs itself is gone).
  • PathManager.java:68 (constructor should fall back to installPath, keep findInstallPath()'s own current-dir fallback) - already matches; findInstallPath() untouched.
  • Terasology.java:277 (--homedir "should not have been removed") - it wasn't; still wired to useOverrideHomePath (lines 131-132/279). Must have been flagged against an intermediate diff.
  • PathManager.java:297 (why absolute log paths) - fixed above; nothing is absolute anymore, everything resolves off a home-or-OS-standard base the same way.
  • CONFIGS_DIR → plain OS-standard-config-dir suggestion - deliberately not taken as literally suggested: config is resolved from a conditional base (usingOsStandardDirs ? PROJECT_CONFIG_DIR : homePath) so it keeps nesting under an overridden home instead of always defaulting to the OS location - same reasoning as the logs/cache fix above.

Two bugs found along the way, unrelated to the above but worth a fix while touching this file:

  • getHomeModPath() never actually returned the home module path (modPaths.get(0) was cache-or-install, never home) - every real caller (ModuleInstaller, ClientConnectionHandler, Behavior[/Collective]System) wants the home one specifically. Fixed + regression test.
  • resolveStateDir() didn't validate $XDG_STATE_HOME per spec (must be absolute) before using it - now falls back to ~/.local/state when it isn't.
  • getAllPaths()'s reflection sweep was grabbing static Path fields too, so it was creating the OS-standard directories on disk even under --homedir. Excluded static fields from the sweep.

PathManagerTest: 9/9 unit, 2/2 filesystem-side-effect, all green. checkstyleMain clean.

Fixes #5281 (installing into `C:\Program Files\terasology` and running
without elevation crashes with `AccessDeniedException` trying to create
`.local` next to the install - the game shouldn't write user data next
to its own binaries).

Saves/recordings/screenshots/modules/sandbox/configs move to the OS's
standard per-user data location; logs/module-cache to the OS's standard
state/cache location. `--homedir` (TerasologyLauncher, and tests via
`useOverrideHomePath`) still overrides all of that into one
self-contained, relocatable tree, exactly as before.

Resolves those OS-standard locations directly, no third-party library:
JNA's Shell32Util (Win32 known-folder API, already a dependency) on
Windows, `$XDG_*` env vars on Linux, fixed `~/Library/...` paths on
macOS. Avoids the PowerShell shell-out a dev.dirs-based approach would
carry on Windows (see BenjaminAmos's PR review) without needing an
unreleased upstream fix or a Java 22 bump.

Migrates existing data on first launch after upgrading (Copilot review):
without --homedir, switching the default root would otherwise make
upgrading users' saves, modules, and settings look like they vanished -
they're just sitting in the old default location now. useDefaultHomePath()
moves the legacy root (unchanged on Linux; ~/Library/Application
Support/Terasology on macOS; SavedGames-or-Documents/Terasology on
Windows) into the new one, then separately carries its nested
configs/logs/cachedModules on to their own new split locations too,
since those move even where the data root itself didn't (e.g. Linux).
Safe to run every launch: each move only happens once, when the new
location doesn't exist yet.

PathManagerTest: 15/15 unit, 2/2 filesystem-side-effects, all passing.
checkstyleMain clean.
