Could you explain what specifically is missing from the current browser experience with Add to Home Screen, and why a native app would be better for your use case? I’m particularly interested in where the web version falls short and whether some feature disparity between native and web would be acceptable.

I’m considering native Android and iOS apps for my fork and am already working on publishing an OpenAPI specification. Contributions are very welcome, including AI-assisted development of the mobile apps, and I’d be happy to support anyone willing to take this on.

@antonio-ivanovski For me, a mobile app would be great because of: -

1. Notifications of new expenses in a group (would work better with your fork because it actually has accounts and I could get notifications specific to transactions pertaining to me)
2. Easier navigation (dont have to open browser > open website > find group > make transaction etc etc)
3. Possible tighter UI, since the app is being tailored to a phone and doesn't need to follow the clunky schema for a PWA (its not bad, but native UI with fast navigating tabs etc would be so much better)

Please give my fork a try, think you will enjoy it 😉, here is why:

Already have added email notification for expenses and group activity that you are concerned with. Want to improve this feature with more notification channels like telegram and push notification and also granular control over what you get (you might not want to get notifications for 10$ expense)

You can use this even with the original Spliit, but on my fork i am working towards making the app work offline, so you can create expense offline and have it be actually created once you go online. Still early for this feature as it is larger refactor. This is the only thing that might make me make a native app since adding offline support to native app is lot easier compared to a PWA.

Recently had made the PWA application have different shell wrapper components for desktop and mobile, this allowed the app to look bit differently on mobile. For example it has a bottom nav bar instead of the group top bars. Also there were bunch of wrappers that got squished.

Just signed up on your instance and imported my Groups from the official instance - working like a charm! Still not a fan of PWAs (even if it is offline) because it stays tied to a browser which makes it clunky for me. Would love a native app, and thank you for your time and effort developing this incredible fork!

P.S. You can look into leveraging the Apprise library to let users configure their own notification endpoints if needed, I was specifically talking about native app notifications on my phone for transactions though.
