Same problem, different solution, because symlinks or junctions are also not ok. .exe files will work very well OTOH.

@jennybc If rig changes the .bat files to .exe files, will that break Positron in some way?

FWIW rig already updates the positron setting for the directory that contains the R installations in user mode. In admin mode they are at the usual place, so I guess that's fine for Positron.

positron-r has high rig awareness but does not currently rely on the .bat files. Basically because of the #189 problem, i.e. that putting the .bat on the PATH didn't really do anything on Windows. So I never made the .bat file load-bearing for anything. So, no, I don't expect such a change to break anything.
