Reference to Existing Issue

Closes #565.

Description of Changes

Replaces the ambiguous image-owner and Makefile user settings with IMAGE_REGISTRY and IMAGE_NAMESPACE.

Keeps IMAGE_OWNER as a deprecated namespace alias, updates Docker Compose and build-stage base-image references, and validates rendered Compose configuration plus Makefile image commands.

Screenshot

N/A

Separated registry hosts from repository namespaces while retaining
IMAGE_OWNER as a deprecated namespace alias.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Image references now use configurable registry and namespace settings, which default to docker.io and openwisp. Make uses the resulting image prefix for image operations and publishing. Docker Compose services and Dockerfiles use the new settings. IMAGE_OWNER remains a deprecated namespace fallback. CI and release commands, documentation, and tests reflect the updated configuration.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: pandafy

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to e30bb

GitLab image publishing can fail or target the wrong repository, so the publish destination should be corrected before merging. The tests should also isolate inherited image settings to avoid misleading failures.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e30bb

Normal builds use the new settings consistently, but publishing no longer preserves the existing GitLab project path. Skipping builds can also select unrelated local images instead of images built for a custom registry. These gaps affect update delivery and release provenance. The inspected changes do not add runtime privileges or new credential recipients.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · observed: Both GitLab workflows previously published beneath registry.gitlab.com/openwisp/docker-openwisp. They now supply only IMAGE_REGISTRY, so Make derives registry.gitlab.com/openwisp/. This drops the intended project component and changes the publishing ownership target. The documented mirror can consequently miss updates or publication can fail; unchanged credentials do not establish permission for the newly derived targets.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Custom-registry builds tag images under IMAGE_REGISTRY/IMAGE_NAMESPACE, but publishing with SKIP_BUILD=true selects IMAGE_NAMESPACE-only local tags. Building and then publishing with otherwise matching custom-registry settings therefore does not select the images just built. Missing aliases cause a failure; existing stale or unrelated aliases can instead be promoted successfully under the intended destination tags. CI's deliberate Docker Hub promotion explains the special case, but source identity is not checked for other callers.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A source-selection error can affect the nine published image repositories and, when those images are deployed, ten OpenWISP service selections within a deployment. The GitLab path regression affects the secondary publishing destination; Docker Hub remains the documented default. Deployment-wide impact requires consumption of the affected images, not merely execution of the configuration tests.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported provenance failure requires a publishing caller using SKIP_BUILD=true with a custom registry and an existing mismatched namespace-only local tag. Make can then publish that tag without detecting its mismatch. This is not a demonstrated anonymous attack: changing local image content requires access to the publisher's build environment or Docker daemon, and publication still requires destination authorization.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The configuration inputs are deployment and publishing settings, not new request-derived inputs. CI registry login and publication remain gated to successful master-branch pushes. Registry hosts and secret references are unchanged in both workflows; the PR changes image paths beneath those authenticated hosts.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Error propagation contains missing-source and denied-push failures, but does not detect a successfully tagged wrong image. Retrying the sequential publication loop can leave mixed remotely visible states; interruption recovery and concurrent publishers are not covered by the inspected tests. These transaction-wide limitations predate the PR and are not retained as new concerns.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate prebuilt-source identity from destination registry and namespace. Preserve the intended GitLab project path explicitly, and use a known source prefix or recorded image digest for promotion rather than making SKIP_BUILD implicitly choose Docker Hub aliases.

🟠 Major · Use the same empty-namespace fallback as Compose. · Makefile:22

Makefile:22
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Use the same empty-namespace fallback as Compose.

If IMAGE_NAMESPACE is explicitly empty through .env, the environment, or the command line, both ?= assignments leave it empty. Make then constructs references such as docker.io//openwisp-base, while Compose falls back to IMAGE_OWNER or openwisp. Normalize the empty value before constructing IMAGE_PREFIX so Make uses the same namespace as Compose.

The second build is deliberate. SKIP_BUILD=true must keep the namespace-only source used by CI Docker Hub tags. Reusing IMAGE_PREFIX only for this release path needs a separate source-prefix setting or a duplicate publish recipe. Both conflict with this PR's single-prefix design and DRY constraint, so the rebuild prevents selecting stale or wrong image tags.

@nemesifier No outstanding review findings remain on #712.

  • All six review threads are resolved.
  • CI Build, CodeQL, and CodeRabbit checks passed.
  • The Changelog Bot check was skipped.
  • The PR review decision is APPROVED.

GitHub still reports the merge state as BLOCKED. The returned data does not identify the blocking requirement. This is the only outstanding status I can confirm; it is not an unresolved code finding.

Learning: In openwisp/docker-openwisp, the public image prefix consists of IMAGE_REGISTRY plus IMAGE_NAMESPACE. The configuration intentionally excludes a separate publish-only destination prefix. The GitLab publish destination in .github/workflows/ci.yml is intentionally registry.gitlab.com/openwisp, not registry.gitlab.com/openwisp/docker-openwisp.
