- Added an MCP server that puts each of kipart's eight commands behind a tool of the same name, so an AI agent can convert a part description without a shell. Run it with the
kipart-mcpcommand, orpython -m kipart.mcp_server; it speaks MCP over stdio. - A tool takes its part description as text or as a file path, and hands the result back as text unless it was told where to write it, so a symbol can go from SPD through CSV to
.kicad_symwithout anything being left on disk. - The server also serves SPD.md and JPD.md as resources, so a model can look up how to write a part description before writing one.
- SPD.md and JPD.md now live in
kipart/docsand are installed with the package rather than sitting only in the repository, so the MCP server can serve them from any install and not just from a checkout. - The CSV of pin data gets no resource of its own — it's a tool argument rather than a format anyone keeps on disk — so the
kiparttool's description spells out the rows a symbol is written as, the columns it may hold, and the values each column takes. - The MCP server is optional: it needs FastMCP, which needs Python 3.10, so it comes as the
kipart[mcp]extra rather than as a dependency. Nothing else in kipart depends on it. - Added
symbol_lib_to_csv, which converts a KiCad symbol library into CSV text.symbol_lib_file_to_csv_file(and sokilib2csv) now works from it, and it's what thekilib2csvMCP tool calls to convert a library it was handed as text. cmpparts --match normalizedno longer fails on a part whose name isn't a string, as a name made only of digits comes back from the S-expression reader.spd2csvquotes a value that holds a comma rather than writing it out bare. A property such asDescription: Single precision timer, DIP-8used to split into two CSV fields, and kipart read only the first of them, so the property reached the symbol with everything past the comma missing and nothing said about it. Any property can hold a comma, and a description or a keyword list usually does.

A part written with(extends "base")borrows the base part's units and pins and overrides only its properties; the readers copy those units and pins into it so it comes out as a whole part rather than an empty one.extendsmay chain and the base may sit anywhere in the library.kipart.resolve_extendsis the single place this is done, called once the symbols have been read from a library. -
A property can be named
Manf#, as KiCad names some of its own. An SPD property name is now whatever sits before the colon — any one word holding neither whitespace nor a colon — rather than being held to the letters, digits, and underscores of a word. A name with a space in it remains the one thing SPD can't say.spd.is_property_nameis the single place that rule is spelled, sokilib2spdandjpd2spdno longer drop or refuse such a property either. -
Added the
cmppartscommand-line utility (and thecompare_libraries,compare_parts, andmatch_partsfunctions) for comparing the parts of two or more libraries and reporting what differs. The libraries can be.kicad_sym,.spd, or.jpdfiles, in any mix, so a symbol library can be checked against the part description it was built from. Exits with 1 if the libraries differ, so it can serve as a check in a build. -
cmpparts --ignore-geometrycompares what a part is — its pins, their names, types, styles, visibility, and alternates, and the properties of the part — leaving out where the pins sit, how long they are, and how big the body is. Two libraries built from the same pinout with different--pushor--bundlesettings compare equal under it. -
cmpparts --formatchooses how the report is written:text(the default),richfor a table in the terminal,htmlfor a table opened in the browser, orjsonfor another program to read. The tabular formats give a column to each library, so what changed reads across the row.--outputsays where the report goes, and--no-browserwrites the HTML page without opening it. -
cmpparts -f htmlopens the page in the default web browser rather than handing it to the desktop's generic file opener. On Linux the generic opener gives afile://page to whatever program claims thetext/htmlfile type, which needn't be a browser: a mail client registered for HTML (Thunderbird, as a snap, does) swallows the page and shows nothing while reporting success. -
cmpparts -f htmlsays so when there's no browser to be found, rather than claiming to have opened one. The page is written either way, and the warning names it so it can be opened by hand. -
The browser opened by
cmpparts -f htmlno longer chatters into the terminal. A browser is spawned as a child of the process and inherits its output, so its startup grumbles (GTK modules, and the like) used to land in the middle of the user's shell prompt. -
The rich table is drawn only as wide as its contents need rather than stretched across the terminal, and
--widestretches it. The libraries are named in full above the table so their columns can go by filename alone, since a path in a column heading sets the width of the whole table. -
cmpparts -i unitssets the unit boundaries of a part aside and compares its pins as one table, so a part drawn as a single unit and the same part split across several come out alike. Nothing about the units themselves is then reported, but every difference in the pins still is. -
cmppartsnow compares a pin's alternate functions the way it compares the pin's own name: alternates are matched by name, an alternate that only one part has is flagged by name (missing alternate), and an alternate both parts share has its type and style compared (alternate 'TX' type). It used to report only that the set of alternate names differed, saying nothing about a changed type or style. -
cmpparts --matchpairs parts up across libraries whose names don't agree:exact,normalized(case and punctuation set aside, the default),fuzzy(names merely alike), orpins(recognizing a part by its pinout alone).--alias OLD=NEWpairs two parts up by hand. -
Added the
kilib2jpdcommand-line utility (and thesymbol_lib_to_jpdandkilib2jpdfunctions) for reading a KiCad symbol library straight into a JPD description, which tookkilib2spd | spd2jpdbefore. -
