We are always interested in hearing from prospective graduate students, postdoctoral fellows (PDFs), and motivated undergraduates who genuinely share our research interests. New lab members are accepted depending on grant funding, fit with the lab, and available mentorship. Candidates with their own scholarship or fellowship funding are often easier to accommodate. Dedicated undergraduates are regularly welcomed and are usually co-mentored by graduate students, PDFs, or Research Associates.

The Roger lab works on diverse problems in deep-time evolution, microbial genomics, proteomics, phylogenetics, and computational biology (see research page). Our ‘wet lab’ research combines culturing, molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, cell biology, advanced microscopy and lab members generally do a lot of bioinformatic analyses. Other lab members are computational biologists doing fully in silico research. Because much of our work involves ’omics-scale datasets, students and PDFs with strong quantitative skills and coding experience—or a strong desire to learn these skills—are especially encouraged to apply.

Trainees join a multidisciplinary, collaborative lab environment and are embedded in the vibrant research communities of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the interfaculty Institute for Comparative Genomics.

Information and guidelines for graduate and undergraduate applications are available here.

To inquire about joining the lab, please email me an honest statement of your research interests and why you are specifically interested in the Roger lab. Attach your CV, names and contact information for 2–3 references, and, for prospective graduate and undergraduate students, an unofficial transcript.
