Terms of Service — Vozen

type it, hear it.

Last updated: 2026-07-20

Vozen is an open-source, self-hosted Text-to-Speech (TTS) bot for Discord: each instance is run by an independent operator. By using a Vozen instance, you agree to these Terms. Because the software is self-hosted, the instance operator is responsible for its operation and for compliance with the applicable rules.

1. Minimum age

You must be at least 13 years old, or the higher minimum age required by the laws of your country, to use Discord and, by extension, Vozen. Vozen is not directed at children under that age.

2. Acceptable use

By using Vozen you agree not to:

  • Use the bot for harassment, intimidation, hate speech, or to target people.
  • Send spam or abuse the service (e.g. circumventing message/character limits, deliberately overloading the instance).
  • Synthesize or broadcast illegal content, or any content that violates applicable laws.
  • Violate the Discord Terms of Service or the Discord Community Guidelines.

The instance operator and the administrators of each server may enforce additional rules (blocklist, limits, role restriction, kill-switch) and may remove access to the bot.

3. Reporting problems

To report a problem, abuse, or a violation of these Terms or of the Discord Developer Policy involving Vozen, use the support server (discord.gg/4kYw2WUbNN). Reports are reviewed and appropriate action is taken.

4. Premium, payments, cancellation, and refunds

The official Vozen instance may offer optional paid features through Discord Premium Apps and Ko-fi. The purchase channel's own terms also apply. A Ko-fi purchase is a transaction between the buyer and the official instance operator; Ko-fi is the payment platform, not the seller of Vozen's digital service.

  • Paid features offered through an external channel must also be available through Discord Premium Apps wherever Discord supports that offering, at a final pre-tax price no higher on Discord than through the external channel.
  • A subscription can be cancelled through the channel where it was purchased. Cancellation stops future renewal; access normally remains available until the end of the paid period, subject to that channel's rules.
  • For a missing, defective, or misdescribed digital service, or to request a refund, contact the support server. Ko-fi refunds are handled by the operator; Discord purchases are also subject to Discord's purchase and refund process.
  • For Ko-fi activation by verified Discord email or receipt, ticking the activation checkbox expressly asks the operator to begin providing the paid digital features immediately and acknowledges that any applicable 14-day withdrawal right is lost once performance begins, where all legal conditions for that loss are met. This acceptance is recorded against each activated transaction under activation-terms version 2026-07-19, and the site provides a downloadable confirmation after activation.
  • Nothing in these Terms limits mandatory consumer rights. In the EU/EEA, a 14-day withdrawal right may apply to a distance contract. It is lost early only where all legal conditions are met, including any required prior express consent and acknowledgement. Statutory conformity remedies remain unaffected.
  • Price or feature changes do not reduce the benefits already promised for a paid period. Material changes apply prospectively unless a platform's terms or applicable law require otherwise.
  • Top.gg vote promotion. The first eligible, verified top.gg vote made by a Discord account grants 48 hours of Vozen Plus, once per account for the lifetime of the promotion. Further votes, vote retries, test events, and top.gg double-vote periods do not grant or extend Plus. The reward has no cash value, is not transferable, and may not be obtained through vote automation, alternate accounts used to evade the limit, or other abuse. Vozen may change or end the promotion prospectively, but an already-active 48-hour reward will not be shortened merely because the promotion ends.

Self-hosters who charge for their own instance are the seller and are solely responsible for checkout disclosures, taxes, invoices, cancellations, refunds, and consumer-law compliance.

5. No warranty

Vozen is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including (but not limited to) warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, availability, or freedom from errors. Being self-hosted, there is no guarantee of availability (uptime), of speech synthesis quality, nor of data preservation — the service depends entirely on the instance each operator runs.

This section does not exclude warranties, remedies, or rights that cannot lawfully be excluded, including mandatory consumer rights.

6. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Vozen project authors are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from the use or inability to use the software, nor for content generated, processed, or broadcast by any instance. The operator of each instance is solely responsible for how they run it, for the data they process, and for compliance with the laws and terms of third parties (Discord and, where applicable, Google or OpenAI). Nothing in this section excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

7. Operator responsibility

Whoever runs a Vozen instance (the operator) is responsible for:

  • Complying with the Discord Terms of Service and Developer Policy.
  • Ensuring the proper handling of the data the instance stores (see PRIVACY.md).
  • Complying with the terms of any third parties they enable — in particular those of Google if using TTS_ENGINE=gtts or router (the text to be read is sent to Google Translate TTS), and those of OpenAI if using TTS_ENGINE=neural.
  • Providing a point of contact and responding to reasonable user requests about their data.
  • If charging users, providing all legally required trader identity, pre-contract, tax, cancellation, refund, and digital-service information before purchase.

8. License

Vozen is free software distributed under the GNU AGPL-3.0 license (file LICENSE; declared in the license field of package.json). The use, copying, modification, and distribution of the source code are governed by that license. In particular, the AGPL requires that anyone who runs a modified version accessible over a network make the corresponding source code available to users.

9. Changes

These Terms may be updated. The version in force is the one present in this repository. Continued use of the bot after changes implies acceptance of the new Terms.
